EU Backs Canadian Mining Company in East Greenland

Greenland Resources has been designated by the EU as a high-priority project.

“This could become one of Greenland’s largest enterprises. If we get it right, it could generate up to €90 million — around DKK 672 million — in value for the country every year,” Ursula von der Leyen said.

Greenland Resources, the Canadian mining company behind the project, received its exploitation licence in June last year.

According to the Greenland Government’s 2026 Political and Economic Report, the company is currently preparing drafts of its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Social Impact Assessment (SIA).

“I’m very excited. This is a team effort, and the most important thing is the local community in Ittoqqortoormiit. We want to do quite a lot for them. It simply has to happen at the right time and in coordination with the Greenland Government.”

Shiffman says Greenland Resources already has a number of partners within the European Union.

“We have binding offtake agreements with the largest steel companies in Europe. This is not a theoretical project — there is already a real economic interest among European steel producers.”

If the mine receives the remaining approvals, Shiffman expects construction to take four years. He also expects the mine’s tax contributions to be equivalent to around 30 percent of Greenland’s current gross domestic product.

THE MINE AT MALMBJERGET

The Canadian company Greenland Resources Inc. plans to extract molybdenum from a mine located approximately 30 kilometres west of the coast near Mestersvig.

The plan is for the mine to operate around the clock for 18 years, producing 22,000 tonnes of molybdenum concentrate during that period.

I recon you know I ain't gonna read all that.
But, easy skimming.
You want to extract minerals?
That shit is tricky in arctic enviroments, but sure, you might be among the most qualified to do it. So, the Greenlanders themselves have first say on this (as far as we're concerned) but we do have the, hah, "military" that kept Hans Island an issue for half a century. Still, if they are ok with your ideas (extract without destroying the enviroment - hunting is SO fucking important to the people up there) then have at it, set up shop (with the proper permits)
