We power our cars by gasoline and diesel. Let me talk only about gas.

We used to have carburetors that dragged gas in.
Then we had fuel injection that did like a squirt gun. To make a fine mist. Fine is better for economy, what is better then a mist? vapor.

If you heat the gas to a vapor then burn it, you can get 100 mpg in a v8 6000 pound car, a guy did it in the 1980. Documented, college professor.
