Same reason bitcoin is valuable. Why's bitcoin valuable? Because people agree that it's valuable. It doesn't actually 'exist' but it represents money to people so therefore it's real. That's all money has to do, it's a unit that represents 'stuff' or 'hours worked' in the physical world.Also if you actually tried to pay off the debt you would be in a serious economic depression. The US can print its own currency and therefore it will never default on its bonds.The issue with the debt is long term and the way to tackle it is by debasing the currency slightly over many years, meaning the govt pays back its debt with dollars worth less than they originally were, which will mean slightly higher inflation but that's the only reasonable way unless you plan to completely slash social security and medicaid (which no one is ever going to do)It's never about paying off the debt but just increasing gdp higher than the debt goes up, the US can still sustain running up a big bill each year because it's the world's reserve currency which gives it a lot of leverage though.
