During the 2000s my family would visit Sanfransisco once or twice a year and we always had really good experiences. Specifically the trips there before or not long after the 08 financial crisis. There were a ton of unique and cool shops and stores (which largely disappeared by 2010) and there were some really ambitious projects there like the Sony Metreon building.

when my family went there it would be in the nicer parts of town, but it never felt dirty or dangerous back then. and some of my favorite memories I have are going there during Christmas and seeing how well the city decorated certain areas for Christmas. it was beautiful.

Basically my impression I have from going there growing up is it had a lot of soul back then, but I was young and probably didn’t “see” much of the reality there.

my question I guess is if it was actually a better place at one point versus what I hear today. I made the thread because people are always shitting on SF here, and I’m just curious if it was ever a good or fun place or what. Because it seems to be so intertwined with politics and news I feel like this is something I can ask about here. Would be interested to hear some older peoples opinions on it. I haven’t been there in over a decade.

Some light research tells me during the 90s it may have been really fucking nice there—- but that also correlates with basically everywhere being better during the 90s (to a degree)
I saw Portland for the first and only time around 2014 or so- and I had a decent time there, and from what I heard I basically saw it righr before it nose dived or when it was starting to get a lot worse. And I suspect it’s probably a similar situation where all of these big cities for better or worse were probably a lot more pleasant a few decades ago

There's Hollywood movies set there in the 1940s and 1950s. It was beautiful and famous for being beautiful. The Paris of the West.

It still is. Here's a pic of what it looks like now.
