Yes they are legitimate most of the time, the media selects the winners way ahead of time so the only reason to actually rig an election is to thwart the medias candidate and that probably rarely happens, and then every once in a blue moon a candidate slips in past the medias approval. But as far as plain out election rigging goes, I don't think it happens very often in the last 100 years because just because there is no need to.

They're legitimate. What stops them from lying about the results are the countless volunteers involved in the process.
If you're really concerned and want to know for certain why you should trust elections, you can volunteer too. It's a fairly patriotic thing to do, when you think about it.
