One those promises is national integrity. Ukraine is an ally to the US so allowing it to lose territory without a fight makes the US look like a poor ally. It also encourages conquest which multiplies the US problems and fucks with global markets. We are having a war in Iran and look how much that fucked things up. Now imagine that multiplied by 10 or 20. The Europeans care because they were formerly empires and buy into the current empire. They understand the consequences of an empire not fulfilling its obligations. They also know that things only stay far away if you make them far away.
