Matt Orchard says the dad did it, and I agree. He was raping her, thought she was about to blab about it, so he killed her. Wrote the bizarre ransom note. But the mom called the cops before she got to the part in the note saying not to call the cops, and everything afterwards was him improvising.It makes sense. All the other theories are too outlandish

I never can understand why nobody on this website is even willing to consider the possibility that there was an intruder. They were socialities, many people knew them and the father was a big shot with probably countless enemies. Also, nobody here ever considers that the shady housekeeper also had keys to the home. She was cleared by DNA to be sure, but not everyone around her. The whole thing seems like a kid-napping gone wrong orchestrated by a bunch of naive 20-somethings.

My theory about the note is that it was either a legit kidnapping gone wrong or some sort of a sick joke. It is not an established fact that all of the doors were locked, and even if they were, it is just as plausible that the intruder could have had a key.
