1. GM is stupid and always does stupid things (ie, attempting to remove Carplay and Android Auto, discontinuing the hybrid Volt and going balls deep on EVs nobody wants).2. GM makes every decision based on fleecing customers. Also they don't even paint their frames, they literally use a wax coating that comes off within 20,000 miles I used to be GM fan but they have mismanaged that company into the fucking ground. The only trucks worth buying from them are the 3/4 or 1 ton trucks, either diesel of the gas L8T without all the AFM bullshit. Ford runs the game now.

It's $40 to replace it on an Audi and sits next to the drain plug, but I'm sure GM will find a way to stick it in a terrible location.

>>542784718>but German brands have been doing it for like 20 years nowFinally somebody who isn't a wrenchlet. I worked at an M3 specialist from 2013-17 and a bunch of the cars we dealt with had this bullshit. There's even worse stuff too like the fact that you can't properly bleed brakes on E46s and newer without an outrageously expensive service computer, our Autologic was the cheap option at the time and it was still like $20k plus a multi-thousand dollar annual subscription. I've heard some euro brands also have no oil drain and you have to use a vacuum thing to suck the oil out from the top but I've never dealt with one and not sure which cars have it, sounds like VAG shit though.
>>542786071I must have misunderstood your schizobabble, apologies

Retards vastly overestimate how often these sensors go bad. No your 15 year old rust bucket that once had a random sensor go bad is not a good reason to hate sensors.

Think of the way that technically increases GDP!!!Do understand now, just how fake and gay the modern world is?
>>542785585>I bet you niggerfaggots complained about the introduction of analog gas gauges tooI would trust a mechanical analog gas gauge before I trust a digital sensor. I've had to chase enough malfunctioning sensors to know this is a bad idea and the OBD rarely tells you what you need to know to fix this shit. This just adds more points of failure to an already needlessly complex system and oil is pretty fucking fundamental to a properly running engine. If you run out of gas, no biggie. If you run out of oil, your new truck is fucked.
>>542786783From the company that brought you plastic impellers for an fuel pump that inside the fuel tank and unservicable light balasts that cost $1000 instead of 60 to change the bulb brings you....no lipstick and a fucking oil level sensor that doesn't fucking do anything you couldn't tell in 5 seconds after walking out to your car and noticing a puddle of oil.
>>542781048OMG really sucks that your oil level sensor went out completely and you had no idea there was no oil in the motor causing the motor to self-destruct. That'll be 15k plus tip goy!

>>542786678>I have to replace the catalytic converter.144k isn't bad for a cat, problem is, most of these new cars have 4 separate catalytic converters in an exhaust system so one of them is probably going to fail sooner than it should.
>>542786443Doing it properly requires running a routine that pulses the ABS pumps to push fluid through the system. The old school way is probably fine for routine maintenance on a daily driver but if you need to do a full flush after somebody's seriously overheated the brakes, or if you're installing aftermarket lines and calipers, you really need to do it the proper way to get optimal performance and since we were a performance shop that did a lot of track/race car work we did a lot of the latter. I'd bet a lot of shops don't even know about this and will happily throw on your BBK or whatever without doing the real bleed routine (they probably don't have the hardware to do it anyway) but that's why my shop was one of the most highly regarded track car shops in the country and an official R&D partner and service center for several major aftermarket brands like StopTech (RIP), Brembo/AP, Motion Control Suspension, etc.

When I went to the mountains to snowboard id have to advance the timing. Lol. Still better than this stupid shit
>>542786783The problem is system complexity. Any systems engineer will tell you a more complex system is more prone to failure. The problem isn't so much a few digital sensors, the problem is an entire system of digital sensors controlling critical engine components all working together being controlled by engine control software outsourced to India. So, one random sensor goes bad and now your truck is electronically bricked, at best. Warped heads and cracked block at worst. The great thing about dipsticks is they don't fail.
>>542787211I yanked the cats out of one of my cars, sold them, and got my car registered in a state that doesn't do emissions. Simple as.
>>542787444If they have issues don’t they just assume the worst and move on? What you are describing can he open to any component. An injector can fail and wash out a cylinder requiring a tear down. Etc.
>>542787444I promise the digital sensor (which is going to be there anyway these days) is less of an engineering feat than designing a fucking dipstick tube that routes through everything and doesn't randomly break. They aren't trying to save money on the cost of a dipstick, they're trying to save the engineering man hours on something only a tiny percent of their target market even uses. Only people I know that ever even check their dipsticks are the same people who have an OBD reader to check the sensor output live.

>>542787777Maybe not, the sensor probably involves holes in the oilpan too.
>>542782063now that's advertisement
>>542778462it's happening with everything, not just cars. It's happening with farm equipment too, where farmers can longer repair their own tractors, they must be serviced by the provider. This is part of the larger trend of turning the economy into an owner-less, service-based, rentier system where you will own nothing and allegedly, be happy.
>>542787783Well honestly the last German car that wasn't overengineered pos designed to fleece you as much as possible was Passat B3. After that every one of them is a money sink, but at least you got that muh germoon enjinirung thing, so you were okay. Now they're all just shit.
>>542787444of all the sensors in a modern ICE car that could break, what does the dipstick sensor matter?the only situation where people check the oil level is before changing the oil, and at that point one could just as well measure the volume. think, guys, think.
>>542787871The sensor isn't designed to be removed all the time causing wear. Way easier to design a sensor that doesn't leak than a dipstick.
>>542778462Enshitification, non-self-servicability to be specific.>>542778524Yet. Even Goyota has gone to complete shit. You can't replace the headlight bulbs, they're a sealed system. >>542778462They've been it making it harder and harder to fix your own car, decade after decade. The engineering has been advancing, becoming more complex, more computerized and requiring more specialized tools. I don't think there is a sinister plot behind this. Not from the engineers at Chevy, at least. It's probably more a marketing thing. Like more homosexuals and women are buying trucks now and don't want to their soft hands all icky. If you derive your masculine identity from tinkering on your big ol truck, you just have to understand that that you're not the "modern audience", to borrow a phrase from vidya. >>542787946Becaues it opens up ways of fleecing you. For example you've used some cheap oil instead of certified GoyOil™ and now your oil sensor says your oil level is low and won't let you start up the engine.
>>542788065with the sensor, people don't have to care about it. The dash will let them know they have a problem when it occurs. If you care about checking the oil level every day like an old boomer, you can get a $5 OBD reader off the internet and check it whenever the fuck you want.

>>542788147My hatred for enshitification is why I got gud and do what I do. Complaining on the internet like (you) seemed gay. >>542788162No. The entire point of the exercise is to sell the product or it wouldn't have been made. There wasnt a overwhelming public demand to remove dipsticks in favor of sensors for things people don't care about. There wasn't a public safety issue. 3 things move product developmentCostProfitDemand (whether the rightward shift of the graph or intervention)They didn't remove an analog feature that never fails in favor of a feature that is sure to fail because of demand or cost. So that leaves only one other metric. It certainly wasn't to make things easier or better for the consumer, objectively, because that would be anomolous. As we all know engineers and altruists aren't heading any of these companies.
>>542788476Please look into Right to Repair. Companies are looking for more and more ways to increase profit so they make their products harder for owners to repair without help from the manufacturer. This keeps the products profitable even after purchase and reduces options. If options are reduced, they can jack up prices for services and pitch upgrades and replacements.

>>542788698the introduction of the sensor is to reduce warranty claims. The removal of the dipstick is because virtually none of their target market has any use for it when there is already a sensor there so its just wasted money engineering one.
>>542787940I'll simp for the E92 M3 forever. Our shop car was stroked out to 4.6, dry sump conversion, and had a custom velocity stack setup on the ITBs and holy shit it sounded insane, I wish I had good videos. >>542787958Yeah, that's probably true. Doesn't have to be a weird-ass angle either.
>>542782596Yeah. Also it's absurd how not only wheelbase and overall length but also vehicle width has increased. A 2000 civic compared to a a 2016 feels so much wider. Maximum vehicle width regulations would have probably been a very effective way to lower obesity.

>>542788947Well if you don't do the emissions test then you get fined by the police so yeah most people either do it or they find a shady shop to fake it. Point is OBDII aint going anywhere and makes diagnosing car problems way easier most of the time.

If they want to remove a simple a feature, like a dipstick, to replace it with an electronic sensor you can bet your ass it's going to fail all the time and be a huge bitch to fix. Why? Dealerships have their own lobbying group called the NADA and they are an arm of the big 3 auto manufacturers. They make more in service jobs than they do selling cars.

The sensor tells you if there isn't enough oil and the car tells you if there's an error in the sensor. At 150K miles, maybe you have to drop the oil pan and replace a $50 sensor, but that's once or twice in the life of a vehicle and the rest of the time you enjoy the convenience of being able to just instantly check your oil from at any time an infotainment menu instead of having to do it from under the hood. This board really gives itself as favela spec when the assumed state of basic features is broken or non-functional. "you had no idea there was no oil in the motor" isn't something that ever happens to people who aren't driving shitboxes. If my car isn't actively leaking oil and I change it every 5-6K miles, when am I ever going to need to check the level? I got to fuck up an engine from 1910!!! because I just do ok!!!!!! Fuck you guys! Fucking trannies!+ sar+racist!+antishmeckleick+BLM+trans rights etc etc post birth adult abortion mandates now
>>542778462Did any of you faggots read the article? You can still change your fucking oil it's just digital now like most things in a vehicle.
>>542789816Gregg Abbutt is the biggest cuck ever.
>>542778690theyre getting so expensive that you might as well just buy new
>>542779881My Mazda 3 from 2012 still runs.
>>542782307My cybertruck has been hauling this load. cry more as diesel prices skyrocket why you haul shit like a real man.
>>542789903>RAMs are based but have always had transmission issues.Don't they use Austrian ZF gearboxes? I thought those things were supposed to be bullet proof
>>542779967Heard good things about the Ridgeline.
>>542790148When it starts giving you wrong readings to fuck up your vehicle in the long run or won't let you start the car when the oil is still good.
>>542785737>just wait until your oil pressure drops from lack of oil to add more, broAre you retarded?
>>542781806Overpriced trash. They don't have the V6 anymore, just turbo slop.
>>542790223it wont impress any karens when youre a karen, they had their golden age with the prius and outback... but if they cant buy weird chinese cars that will get people to notice karen again and ask what the hell did she buy? she'll just die lonely and irrelevant
>>542778462my next vehicle will be a 2012-14 ram 1500. cause my work has them and theyre still going with all the retards that use them.
>>542790074Literally stole a dumpster design. Literally! Omfg guis 67/so so cooked. I bet you put your cheese on the uncooked side of the patty too.
>>542789903Not anymore since they moved to ZF 8 speeds in 2014ish
karen used to be the pioneer in cars, she wanted jew hubby to get her the navigator when it came out then begged for the escalade when those niggers started making rap music videos with her fancy ford
>>542789931Vehicle with a dipstick>Oil sensor goes out>Dip stick shows oil loss >Engine is trouble shot and fixed for $50 or ignored and regular check oil with dipstickVs.Vehicle without a dipstick>Oil sensor goes out>Engine keeps running because computer is getting faulting readings>Runs out of oil>Spins bearings>Turbo dentates>Engine overheats and cracks block>Engine needs to be replaced over the failure of a $50 part>6 month wait for parts
>>542790273Well buy one that has a v6 like I did. I fucking love it.
>>Semi loads don't exist nor do they need transport. Fuck you guys I got mine bitchezzzz!!!!Fungi
>>542789903Both ram and ford have great powertrains now. 6.7 to 10r140 and Cummins 6.7 to zf8 is about as good as you can get out of a vehicle.
>>542790081The majority of transmission are some form of automatic. These don't use a gear engagement shaft, it's all planetary gear sets and hydraulic clutch packs and break bands.Fuck up the fluid flow with a bad seal and it will not engage for that gear.Clutch or break bands glaze over and it's fucked.
>>542790583Never forget those faggot dodge brothers are THE reason we live in this faggot consumerslop society. And if you honestly believe dodge vehicles are reliable maybe the Jews are right about the goyim
tl;dr I never check my dipstick. Ever. The new trucks have MDS and the little oil passages get clogged and you get the hemi/LS tick. I don't ever check my oil because I change the shit every 3000 miles. New engines are sealed very good, no leaks, and if you aren't bouncing it off the rev limiter as soon as you cold start it the engine will last 200,000 miles.
>>542778462BMWs have been doing this since the early 2010s. I guarantee you they are digitizing it (which is a gay mistake) but still.
>>542790533There is no error condition the sensor could get into where the main computer won't know there's a sensor fault. Fuck people on this board are just retarded.
Enjoy your goytrugg, Kyle, lmao
>>542790796Don’t buy dodge vehicles? I haven’t
>>542790706Oh, I'm sorry, I've never used an automatic, it's just not popular here. Then what you're saying makes sense.
>>542790828>But the computer will know if it failsLol, LMAO even
>>542789573We spent $10 million changing the cracker machines production to make the cracker sizes smaller to sell them at the same price at Nabisco. Suck crackers fags.
>>542790881Have you never dealt with faulty sensors in a vehicle before? You think if the sensor fails its just gonna report that the oil level is full?
>>542789919The old 90s and early 00s ford rangers were perfectly fine daily driver trucks for people who usually didn't need to actually haul things. That's done. They're not selling a cheap small truck anymore.
>>542790081we aren't talking about a Lada kopeyka, Alyoshait's an automatic with electronics
>>542790837Manuel are special order here now. It's getting that way for semi trucks also. To the point that most CDL holders don't even have the endorsement for a manual. (It's still an Allison automatic, that is just a manual with a computer controlled shifter)
>>542790984the only cars that ever had reliable warning lights for low oil are german
>>542790828No u. Seriously. T. Expert PhD in stuff. Really.
>>542778462They have an oil level sensor in the oil pan, making dipsticks redundant. It's similar to the evolution from manually checking tire pressure to utilizing tire pressure sensors.
>>542778462THEY HATE YOU AND WANT YOU TO BE THEIR SLAVE
>>542790823>BMWs have been doing this since the early 2010sYeah but it's only bad when Americans do it. Just like plastic oil pans and subscription heated seats are fine when BMW does it but bad if GM tries it.
>>542790984Yes, a sensors getting fouled by cooked oil is common. They will hold a oil level reading and the computer will never know. The majority of faults in new vehicles is electric issues. Changing it so that only an electric sensor can tell you the level of your oil is "trust the science" vax retardation.
MY ONLY QUESTION IS CAN WE MAKE THE HEADLIGHTS HIGHER? AND WHITER? THANKS
>>542791130ive had an oil pan busted on a toyota and it never warned me that the oil was low, i saved it by pulling off and turning it off because i hit a shovel on the highway at night
>>542789794Its 2 pieces of plastic melted together. You aren't resealing that. Then when a little moisture gets in it shatters the 750°C bulb. C'mon. You know that.
>>542778690>I'm only sticking to used cars.>>542781863>Good luck with that. Replacement parts are in the shitter. Private equity is buying up the junkyards destroying those parts.Literally this, just google "junkyard fire" and you'll be amazed at the results. Over the past few years, dozens of different junkyards around the country have somehow gone up in flames, each time destroying hundreds or in some cases over 1000 cars. Once those used cars are destroyed you can't harvest them for parts
>>542791049and german cars have mostly moved away from the dipstick. And most non-german cars never really had oil level sensors at all, just the standard idiot light sensor that comes on when your engine is already fucked.
>>542786678How much transmission maintenance did you do? I bet you never once changed the fluid like everyone else.
>>542778462so they can charge an extra £30 for the dipstick, without hurting sales because most users probably don't even know about ittrying to absorb even more of that consumer surplus
>>542786287The Chinese have fixed this issue of needing multi thousand dollar diagnostic tools. You can get ones for a few hundred bucks that does everything.
>>542791189they want us goyim (and you goyim too) in public transitthey want cars to be only for the rich, like 100 years ago and for government officials, of coursecan't have commiesars on the bus
We've known for several years now that they're intentionally designing newer cars so that you can't do even basic barebones repairs yourself and have to take them to be serviced. This is a shock?
Reminder American cars are built by Mexicans
>>542791316jews are just stupid, they should let old white women or karen sell chinese cars by being their adopters, then they can hack them and spy on karen
>>542778462checking your own oil is highly antisemitic
>>542791393>spy on karenwhat for?to die of boredom?
>>542791509eventually the younger karens will buy them if old karens were impressed with them
>>542790828Its called a fail state and that isn't what that anon was talking talking about, retard. Does it fail open or closed? Do you know? No. Shut up. What does happen is when the sensor fails it sends a signal to ecu that it can't read the level. Lets compare this to an O2 sensor failure, dipshit. Its not that your cats failed you get a check engine light and your car goes into limp mode. The sensor reading the oxygen ratio passing by it fails and your car goes into limp mode. Now, lets compare the 2. Which is more catastrophic? Low engine oil/the possibility of low engine oil due to a sensor or increased CO2 going through your exhaust/a sensor failure. It's like you're a fucking shill or terribly butthurt your favorite manufacturer is being called a kike.
>>542790241Aka you didn't read the article.
>>542791028It would have been sweet if they just kept selling those for years and years lol. Like the B Series with the 2.5 skyactiv after the 2.3l A lot of unibody cars weigh more than those things now
>>542791130>It's similar to the evolution from manually checking tire pressure to utilizing tire pressure sensors.yeah what a huge improvement instead of just looking at your tire or checking with an analog pressure stick now let's use sensors that break all the time and constantly throw dashboard warnings and also have Bluetooth enabled to help flock cams track you better
>>542789931I'm a mechanic. You'd rather have a dipstick. I don't count my money until it's in my hands. Your talking best case scenario. Go ahead and buy one then Holmes. Mark my words. There's going to be a lot of people in a few years yelling about how they want a class action lawsuit because of this. The only reason that they would do this is to cut costs. It's literally the only reason. They do not care about you or functionality. Some fucking bean counter came up with this idea.
>>542778462us cars are garbage who cares
>>54278122114hr bluebook shop labor charge on alternator change vw tourag. -We know what we are doing. Fuck you! Who are you anyway! Oh? Good. Hope it all burns. >>Needs more accerant for my liking personally. Stacy/Gary you hear me out there?Yes.
>>542791771Even cutting costs does not make sense of the equation because modifying fabrication of the standardized block castings will cost. It's a "pogrom" of "them". That's final. For everyone and everything. (You) are "standardized" to them too<goes for most of the global population, the way "they" look at it all, sorry to say. Especially at this time and place in history, again. Doesn't have to be this way but is and will get much much worse at "warp speed". I have no horse in this race am probably dying. I was only a spectator.
>>542791765They're very reliable, on every new car, and give you real time time pressure updates in your instrument cluster at all times.
>>542791771>The only reason that they would do this is to cut costThe electronic sensor in the oil pan costs more than a dipstick. They moved to the sensor for reliability, so people like you don't run your engines with a low oil level.
>>542778462You'd have to be retarded to ever buy a car from an American brand.
>>542790831What do you have against trucks? My cock is a cervix smasher and I think big lifted trucks are awesome. Did your dad never take you to see monster jam? Do you not plan on smashing through any police blockades? Are you even on any government watchlists or just the Reddit moderator lists? Did your dad even love you?
>>542791509Sexual jollies/physical/perverse mental stimulation+control, overpowerment, ownership, rape right in front of you etc. Stuff like that. Really. I am not kidding. I am not. It matters to them alot. It's everything to them actually. Makes life worth living to them, those things. Their fancy and that is "fancy" and they "fancy" it because to them they like it. Can't get enough either. Never enough. Never. Yes. It's like that.
