Where turbo?
>>542809263why? Real work trucks don't need and can't use an engine that big.
>>542809351>lets put uneeded atress on the engine and pistons by adding a turboYou eurofags can't comprehend actual fucking horsepower can you? Its not a lawn mower engine, it doesn't need a gay turbo

>>542809532my dad rapes me in my sleep
>>542809819Every engine should have a turbo on it, there's literally no reason not to blow more air in.Even if you want to keep it conservative and only add 5 psi it still gives you a massive rush of torque which is more effective than any cam change or intake/exhaust mod you could ever do. N/A tuning is a meme

>>542810281The contradictory regulatory goals of both lower emissions and higher gas mileage have ruined the automobile. Electrics are the only solution at this point. Eventually it will be impossible to keep repairing these 50 year old vehicles.
>>542811668You can engineer around it sure, but anons claim is 100% correct and you are being obnoxious for the sake of being contrarian. Go look at the US diesel trucks you overlanding aussies seem to be obsessed with as of late, they can push 40 psi stock.
>>542811765It requires literally no engineering, as long as you didn't build your engine with the absolute lightest weakest components necessary they will easily cop 5 psi

>>542811894Diesel is significantly cheaper to produce than gasoline. The only reason it has ever been more expensive is taxation and regulatory bullshit because the hippie green retards consider it "dirty" to burn diesel. >>542811962Gross is the measurement with no engine accessories, NET is with everything as it comes from the factory. SAE is just a fucking standard, there is SAE net and SAE gross You are a fucking idiot and a poser.
>>542812064Real quick there champ what is the difference between a 2 bolt main, 4 bolt main and 6 bolt main? Why do turbo engines use the latter? Answer without using google.
>>542812190Oh wow now you're repeating exactly what I said back at me after arguing against it like a retard for 10 posts >>542810651>(gross HP)>>542811739>No we measure in SAE net now
>>542812122Not to mention turbos are the lowest service life component of engines due to their high rpm bearings, so just having one makes your vehicle far more expensive to operate and repair. They also increase the pressures inside critical engine components, further reducing service life of those components. You are trading maintenance cost and service life for more power. But do keep up with the name calling - that really strengthens your argument.
>>542809263I have a 7.3 godzilla. The 10R140 it's paired to is a piece of shit, imo. It might actually be good with a 6R140 like this truck but I certainly do not recommend the 10 speed. Also, the godzilla ain't no powerstroke, doesn't even hold a candle to a flame.
>>5428122804 bolt mains are required to handle the side loading crank forces created by having two heads and your cylinders in a V configuration instead of a simpler inline engine with a turbo If your V engine has 2 bolt mains then it was engineered to the lowest standards possible, turbo or not.
>>542812297I missed the net part because ai am shitfaced thats on me. Regardless no US oem is measuring hp without all their pulley accessories you stupid fuck And lots of you aussies buy US 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks now with those engines you keep ripping on despite having access to fj70s and other such overseas bullshit
>>542812342That's not how turbos work wrenchlet bro
>>542812415Yes, guess what extra forces that forced inductions adds to an engine. Hence my argument about yes asshole it adds extra STRESS
>>542812443They did back when your "big block fords used to push 440hp off the lot" - back then they measured in gross HP so all the HP figures were greatly inflated
>>542812531No forced induction does not add side loading to your crankshaft, turbo inline engines do not require 4 bolt mains. V engines should have 4 bolt mains regardless of whether they are turbocharged
>>542812532Yes and all other Oems were doing the exact same shit back in the 70s when your argument was actually relevant
>>542812119The point is, diesel shortages are not a matter of laughing at miggers that can't afford to roll coal anymore. It's about a shortage of the lifeblood underpinning local, national, and global logistics so that there exist things on shelves for you to purchase with your money.
>>542812638Yeah but you can't compare it to today's horsepower, without mentioning that it's gross hp and today we measure in net.
>>542812031I already live in Texas YEEHAW ARAB
>>542812579Yes they do, maybe not directly but they amplify any imbalance in an engine. You are force feeding it air, it will exaggerate every weak point that engine has. In addition to that side loading is not the only problem a stronger main solves.
>>542812667The problem is that infrastructure follows the regulation. We refine less diesel because it is so unfairly disincentivized by the government. Changes to the refining capacity take years to come to fruition, so short term supply shocks are inevitable.
>>542812667Diesel and monkeypox. Not my problem.
>>542812866No they don't buddy, just go look at all the inline turbo engines. The 2jz does not have 4 bolt mainsThe RB26 does not have 4 bolt mainsThe 4G63 does not have 4 bolt mains A VQ35DE with no turbos DOES have 4 bolt mains4 bolt mains are for V engines, not turbos
>>542812638I think the initial change to where HP was measured back in the muscle cars era was to trick car insurance companies. That’s the lore that was passed down to me anyway.
>>542813007For me it’s the 6.2 litre Ford Boss with 4 bolt mains and cross bolts on the side
>>542813007I don't disagree that Inline has much less stress on mains as a function of its design, so 4 bolt mains are sufficient for them. I am arguing that engines with a strong bottom end are required with forced induction. Any forced induction minded motor needs more block rigidity, more clamping force on heads (either through larger head bolts or more bolts per cylinder) stronger con rods (fractured preferably) etc. and all if this is a thing because guess what? Forced induction adds stress to a motor. This is exactly why old school American gas engines catered towards towing (aka stress them to their limit constantly) avoided turbos and STILL do to this day eith the hemi, godzilla and l8t
>>542812031>finn poopooing rally and promoting walkingancestor cry

>>542809417>10 billion lbft of torque>0-60 in 4.7 billion yearsIf it's a diesel anyway.
>>542809956If you put a turbo on a 200 hp engine so it can produce 400 hp then you will need a cooling system that can twice the waste heat production. You dont see big engine cooling systems on modern small displacement turbocharged engines. Now guess why modern engines are infamous for dying early. The idea is that you are supposed to use the turbo only in short 10 second sprints and spend 99.5% of the time crusing on flat ground at 40 mph. In reality it doesnt work that way. Try driving up a mountain and see for yourself. Large displacement low to medium RPM no turbo engines last forever because they arent heavily stressed. Cant have that in the enshittification era.
>>542814859Not really. But I wouldn't just slap a turbo on anything not built for it.
>>542814979That seems perfect for you. Rangers are gay little trucks for teenage boys and suburbanite dads who larp as blue collar men on the weekends.

>>542814063The niggers love their BBCs too. Fuck the big block chevy's. LS shit.
>>542815069Yeah they should have never called it "turbo". Maybe then dumb teens wouldn't slap one on their clapped out 02 civic so they could hear it "whistle". In Alaska they have to throw turbos on tractors because the air is so thin. Big fuckin turbos the size of entire vw motors. Don't get me started on boat turbos; you can stand on em.
>>542814859No it doesn't, you retarded nigger. A turbocharger uses waste heat from the exhaust to increase plenum density, thus improving VE, BSFC, and efficiency. If your car is tuned well, fuel efficiency actually increases with a turbocharger over the NA counterpart. Fuel efficiency and engine life can decrease if you're running at peak boost, RPM, and high IATs, though, a normal daily driven vehicle isn't operating at those conditions. Their have been many a LS based engines turbocharged that last forever and get better MPG than when they were NA to prove this.
>>542815227They call it that because of the turbine
>>542815092I was a longhaul trucker for a decade. I dont care about larping as a "big truck driver" considering I actually drove real trucks as my literal job.
>>542809417You know you don't need 20lbs of boost?5lbs of boost makes a HUGE difference in power and especially fuel economy, and doesn't do anything to the longevity of the motor. In fact, most people who add a turbo both increase the muffler size and add an intercooler, both of which will INCREASE longevity by helping keep the motor cooler.
>>542815092Ranger was a trim package of the Ford full-size truck in the sixties and seventies, not a smaller model of truck.

>>542809532Is that a twin supercharger?
>>542809351You'd want a super on a pushrod like the Godzilla. Even then pushrods aren't for high rpm, that thing is delivering most of what you need at 1200rpm. 3000 is probably all you need to get max power out of it.
>>542815092Different trucks, different applications. End of story.
>>542815227>In Alaska they have to throw turbos on tractors because the air is so thin.Nigger, what? Maybe in Denali or something, but, for the majority of Alaska the air density is equivalent to -6000 ft sea level due to the cold air temps. Air density is all that matters to an engine. It doesn't matter if you're running a 106mm turbo pushing 40PSI if the air is so hot that the actual air density seen by the engine is equivalent to being that the top of Pikes Peak.
>>542815363Just dishing some shit back in your direction, my fucking company car is a maverik hybrid Imho truckers are retards though no offense, i have to teach them how to chain down machinery sometimes

>>542815307>>542815446Only in engines that can handle increased cylinder pressurses (the LS is such an engine obviously) Some older or cheaply made engines cannot, or I guess I say "can but only for a limited time act now and I will throw in a blown out head gasket for free" har har har har
>>542811290>pisses oilWhat the Fuck are you drinking?
>>542815543No, that's just a Naturally Aspirated (NA) V10 with duel throttle bodies on it's shared plenum.
>>542815307>A turbocharger uses waste heat from the exhaust to increase plenum density, thus improving VE, BSFC, and efficiency.Given how the engine is set up, a turbocharger doesnt increase fuel effiency, it increases power output. You increase intake pressure but you also increase exhaust pessure because there is more air and fuel than usual in the cylinder when ignition starts. All that combusted air wont be able to reach normal non turbo expansion before your engine runs out of cylinder volume. The extra pressure does not go towards propulsion, some of it is recovered by the turbo, but the rest flies out of your car's asshole. A great low weight solution for temporarily increase engine output at the expense of fuel economy and engine lifetime (if not properly designed with proper materials and cooling). You basically make a gas engine have the working pressure and temperatures of a diesel engine.
>>542811404Shitty fuel and engineered obsolescence killed the modern car, just like it's going to kill everything else. This winter looks fun.
>>542815596Brother, I'm talking about mining and industrial operations. They add turbos to most heavy machinery because the air is so thin and cold, they help build pressure which is essential to diesel engines. It's not only useful for starting but idling too.

>>542816134Its not a binary thing like yes or no, its a increasing scale of stress you are adding to a motor, some better engineered motors barely notice the change but you are increasing the stress on them regardless You are force feeding it air, you are going to increase cylinder pressures. Period. You and the aussie fucker can argue circles around this all night but its objectively correct

>7.3L VEEEEE EIIGGGHHHHT>150hp
>>542815861>because the air is so thin and coldAnd I'm telling you that is an oxymoronic statement. Cold air isn't thin, and thin air isn't cold. Learn what density is. They add turbos because they're huge diesel engines that run low RPM and piston speeds, which would handicap their VE if they weren't turbocharged. Turbos are the only way they make efficient power and torque.
>>542816320No it's more efficient. That's why every single ICE engine of the last two decades has moved to direct injection so they can chase astronomical compression ratios on low octane fuel - BECAUSE IT'S MORE EFFICIENT.
>>542815717That's a HUGE increase in my books considering how safe it is for the motor, especially considering the fuel economy might improve by 20%.I thought that's why we're all here: the price of fuel.

>>542809263It always confuses me, if it's more processed it should cost more. But Raw sugar costs more than refined sugar, same with salt, seed oil also cost less after refining . >>542815847I didn't know that. That's pretty cool. Sad so many of those got written off by retards. They weren't the sexiest, but that motor is pretty respectable. Too bad dodge is kikes. I have a 3.3 minivan and I wish I had 4 more in storage.
>>542816482so no racing driver ever because the racing driver would naturally desire the extra power of forced induction
>>542816220>Its not a binary thing like yes or noSo, exactly as I said? You're the one acting like it's binary.>You are force feeding it air, you are going to increase cylinder pressures. Period.Nobody said it wouldn't increase cylinder pressure. My point was slapping a low PSI turbo on a stock engine isn't going to lift a head and blow a head gasket just because. TUNING is the key.
>>542816418Thats more to do with better atomization of the fuel than anything. Some modern engines like GMs L8T (compared to its parent the 6.2) went to lower compression ratios because it helps longevity from the decreased stress on engine components. Again when it comes to engineering an engine, do you want it to be a good time or last a long time? You have to make compromises.
>>542815880The 5 guys that got arrested there in a 'sting' where they got set up and 2 of their 'friends' were cops are still in and out of court/jail.I'm going to wait for the competency crisis and the fuel crisis to collapse things a little before i even think about giving a shit.
>>542816320>It’s more efficient at squeezing power out of available volume.Nigger, the VE of a turbocharged engine is WELL above 100%. It would be extremely difficult to get VEs above 120% in any NA that isn't a purpose built $200k+ race engine designed to work within a 600 RPM power-band. You literally cannot get the efficiency of a turbocharged engine with a NA engine without running it at the razors edge of destruction, which dramatically decreases engine life.
>>542816461Read my other post anon. >>542816536It absolutely will decrease the useable lifespan of an engine even if you tune it conservatively with lackluster fuel trims. If you have two identical blocks subject to the same use over their lives say two LS blocks for sake of comparison one NA and one turbo, the NA will last longerAmerican OEMs figured this out a long time ago, there is a reason all their gas tow engines are still NA Fuck you guys I am sobering up meant to pass out by now
>>542811894Cargo ships run on bunker fuel, not diesel.
>>542815545push rods have handled 7,000rpm on factory cars since the fucking 60s non of these dohc 4v engines are revving anywhere close to needing that level of valve train and if you want to talk about efficiency then don't bring up engines that go over 6,200rpm
>>542816220>You are force feedingSure. But if you've done it right, you're actually keeping the motor cooler because of the airflow and larger exhaust. A 15% increase in torque is going to be distributed throughout the motor, and isn't going to be any different than a 15% increase in rpm .The only time you're seeing a camshaft through a block is because you did something stupid with your boost. Otherwise the thing you have to worry about, with longevity, with efficiency, is heat.Heat kills the motor long before a 5psi boost will. There's a reason a turbo is required for high elevations. >>542816242The only reason I've turbod any of my vehicles is fuel economy and endurance. You want power?Get a bigger motor.
>>542816461>No one is firing up a 3500HD crew cab dually and trying to fight it through a wagon sized main street in town getting 5mpg just for transpo some trash and to grab supplies. You're literally describing 90% of men that work the oilfield, rolling coal and snorting rails while they go it.
>>542816450>That's a HUGE increase in my books considering how safe it is for the motor,Yeah.>especially considering the fuel economy might improve by 20%.You'd most likely get 10%-15% increase in fuel efficiency by adding a turbo with a great tune.>>542816528Yeah, all Vipers were NA, and barely had any nanny electronics to keep you from putting yourself into a tree if you got too happy with the throttle. I think that's the main reason they don't get the praise they need to get.
>>542815816>Fuck are you drinking?kike tears mostly.
>>542816962>kike tears Those only go in the shower, if you know what I mean.
>>542816825A 15% increase in torque is much different than a 15% increase in rpm, one is increased cylinder pressure, the other is inertial loads and friction Also compressing the air in the intake creates heat, hence the need for an intercooler. Nobody said 5 psi is going to window the block. I’m saying if you take two otherwise identical engines doing the same work, the one making that extra 15% torque through boost is putting higher cylinder pressure and thermal load through the rotating assembly. That’s additional stress whether the engine survives it or not. Proper engineering can make the turbo engine plenty durable, but it doesn’t make the additional load disappear.I live in CO trust me I understand the altitude benefit.
>>542816901These yuppies cant even fathom that sort of lifestyle mang I tell you whut
fuck dohc fuck turbos fuck gasoline direct injection, OHV naturally aspirated master race YOLO

>>542816901no that's the bosses kid, first generation new money reenacting what they saw other men doing but not understanding what was going on. the Carolina lean is a simulacrum of a whooped old truck thats been overloaded too much, Jimbobs truck was blowing smoke because his engine is shot.all that shit that's getting emulated is shit real truck owners hate because it means something broke which means they're broke and stuck with a smoky pos with flatted suspension that rides like shit. Are they still proud of their shitheap.. if you get them drunk enough and talk shit on it, yeah. The rest of the time they're cursing the damn thing wishing for the day it stops dragging its ass down the road so they can justify buy a new used piece of shit that will get destroyed on the job.
>>542815776>They're killing diesel because diesel keeps for ever, as do the old motors.>The new ethanol gas lasts 3 months in the summer if you're lucky and less in the winter as it absorbs water from the atmosphere and turns to shit.Unless you are on a farm with multi thousand gallon tanks of diesel this fact is not terribly useful
>>542816823Yeah but dohc allows for more fine tuning and intake/exhaust overlap, intake loitering open for longer and other such nonsense
>>542816728>It absolutely will decrease the useable lifespan of an engine even if you tune it conservatively with lackluster fuel trims.I don't really count getting 300k miles out of your LS compared to 290k when turbocharged a actual problem.>If you have two identical blocks subject to the same use over their lives say two LS blocks for sake of comparison one NA and one turbo, the NA will last longerThat totally depends on what you classify use as. If you're talking two LS based engines in trucks used for towing, no, as you're going to be working the NA LS harder to pull the same load compared to a turbocharged LS. Meaning more heat, ring and cylinder wear, more fuel usage, more fuel washing the oil film from your cylinder walls and contaminating your oil leading to even more bearing, cylinder, and ring wear, etc.>American OEMs figured this out a long time ago, there is a reason all their gas tow engines are still NAAll gas tow engines are gas because the US companies spent billions and decades designing those engines and have used them for decades. Spending billions on new turbocharged engines isn't something they're going to do willingly. They're also high displacement pushrod engines operating at relatively low RPMs with 6+ speed transmissions and low rearend gearing. They don't last anywhere near their passenger car counterparts due to the excess wear from towing - even when designed and engineered specifically for towing. Also, efficiency isn't really a concern as gas is cheap and the EPA lenient on truck MPG. The twin turbo Ecoboost V6 F150 will tow more than the 6.2l Silverado 1500, and has more low-end torque and better gas millage than the 1500 and will last just as long.

>>542816823Oooops turns out your big heavy valvetrain requires a big heavy spring to control itOh would you look at that, when you go to a sensible valvetrain with direct cam on bucket or cam on finger follower and 4 small valves instead of two big ones you can run so much less spring pressure that you just automatically get more power and efficiency FOR FREE
>>542817770>when you go to a sensible valvetrain with direct cam on bucket or cam on finger follower and 4 small valves instead of two big ones you can run so much less spring pressure that you just automatically get more power and efficiency FOR FREESomewhat true for commercially viable engines. Though, conversely, the 4-valve DOHC lends itself to only being able to make efficient power in the higher RPM ranges due to the inherent design disadvantages with the valve angles and port design (very limited if no short side radius). This makes for a lazy, inefficient port at low RPMs with shitty fuel mixing abilities.
>>542817567I would expect it to much larger than 10k. And I seriously doubt you would stress the NA engine that much more, and regardless you should be changing oil more often if you are towing regardless to the point where the fuel dilution should be a wash (hue) And pardon me but I think that is a load of shit. The 7.3 ford unleashed has very little incommon with the 460, given the time frame of development Ford could have easily have created a forced induction motor, had they wanted. They did not. They purposely created a engine that can make that power without the increased cylinder pressures and extra thermal load. I’m not saying turbos inherently make engines unreliable. I’m saying that, all else equal, boost adds cylinder pressure and thermal load, so an NA engine has more durability margin. That’s why Ford made the Godzilla a 7.3L NA V8 for Super Duty instead of turbocharging a smaller engine: for an HD gas engine, they could get the required torque and power through displacement rather than adding boost, heat, and complexity. Turbo engines can absolutely be engineered to last a long time, but that doesn’t mean the additional stress from boost magically doesn’t exist
>>542817712Think he means the retards that drive around in consumer pickup trucks made to smoke obnoxiously and raised up on big wheels like a cute little toy monster truck.
>>542817712Well now is the time to switch to electric trucks
>>542817060>identical engines doing the same work, the one making that extra 15% torqueAnon, if their identical, and one is boosted, they're not doing the same work, one is doing 15% more work. That's torque. That's why they say, you buy horsepower, but you drive torque. The question here is, is the boosted engine producing 15% more torque going to last 85% as long as the NA engine and I think, for most old engines (I have an idi 7.3 and a 4.2 I've turbocharged) that your longevity is going to be very similar, with a slight advantage to the NA all things being equal. Which they won't be, because the turbo will get more attention and the NA will get bagged because people will be pissy about how gutless it is compared to the turbo.
>>542817546i like VVT in concept but in practice its just finicky fragile BS.Its not actually adding power, rather its add back low end torque by fake a smaller cam to make up for lousy port velocity at low rpm from massively over sized ports that floe 300+cfm But there is something wrong going on that's not been properly described in car culture/engine building and that is why don't DOHC 4v engines make more power? the numbers don't add up, if you put a 300cfm head on a old push rod small block 5.7L you get a 800hp nascar engine, but a vk56 w/300cfm heads only makes 170cfm sbc power? and if you cam it and spin it up to 8,500rpm you're still only get 500hp unless you do a $50,000 B&B on it.So wtf? nothing DOHC should need anything but a cam swap to hit +100hp/liter but thats something you never see, based on rpm and flow numbers the average N/A 2jz should easily hit 400hp but for whatever reason all that bullshit about higher rpm means more wheel torque= little displacement better! and in the end they resorted turbos to restore the torque that DOHC and VVT couldn't make up for, which is twice as stupid because most turbos are tuned for 6,000rpm unless you oversize and make it laggy
>>542817482Who the Fuck is driving a diesel and living in the city? If you're driving a diesel car, you're now paying a lot more to operate it than the same car with a gas job. Simple as.If you're here, my only advice to you is, get the Fuck out of the city, now. Before it turns into an open air prison full of niggers and npcs and you. And yeah, you can get air tight barrels cheap. I have 3 filled with gas in cool storage to go along with the dozen Jerry cans of premium, and a 1000l of diesel in an old tank I paid $200 for (that came with $400 in fuel oil) 11 years ago. If for no other reason than to beat inflation and feed the generators.

This makes for a lazy, inefficient port at low RPMs with shitty fuel mixing abilities.Real wrenchlet hours They deliberately tune the DOHC 4v economy engines for mid range power and efficiency because IT'S BETTER, they could easily make it a low RPM turd if they wanted to (they don't want to).

>>542818430NO! bad anon, you are wrong now stfu.Even BMW switched from a 4v back to a 2v on their v12 because they couldn't get the driveability out of the high flow head. they could not make a high torque low rom engine out of a 4v because port velocities under 5,000 are trash leading to poor combustion efficiency which is not the same thing as volumetric efficiency but that also tanks below peak rpm range
>>542809263Fuck off I tuned my truck for premium and am now getting fucked sideways by this Jew war
>>542818601If that were that still doesn't prove anything about pushrods, manufacturers would just make their DOHC engines 2 valve.(they don't btw)
