We get "free" natural gas in my town. Long ago, before I was born, NG was discovered here and in exchange for giving away the extraction rights, everyone was granted free NG in perpetuity. Not sure what the limits are and if it's just for residential property but it's one less bill to pay each month. Maybe whoever owned the property long ago when the deal was made could have made more from extracting the gas themselves but given the typical half acre lot sizes here and the capital required, it probably was a good trade off.
