>BREAKING: The US "almost started a war" against China, nearly launching an operation against a Chinese ship in the Middle East this spring, in the midst of the Iran war, after an AI-generated intelligence report falsely identified the vessel as carrying nuclear weapons components, with armed US personnel preparing to board and military aircraft already in the air before officials found the report had been produced with a chatbot, per CNN.

A special operations command analyst had used a chatbot to fuse open-source material with classified signals intelligence, then used AI again to package the result into a standard intelligence report and circulated it across the US military.

>AI-generated intelligence report falsely identified the vessel as carrying nuclear weapons components
wait, israel has nuclear weapons even though it's against the non-proliferation treaty (and they killed Kennedy for trying to stop them) so why doesn't the US military board their ships?

Sooner or later, AI will start a war. Not a matter of if, but when.

Who is to blame? Companies that make ai models and falsely sell it to public as a sentient intelligence, or stupid boomers who have not bothered to understand technology past telegram age, or the voters whom obviously too stupid to comprehend even basic issues in their country?

https://edition.cnn.com/2026/09/18/politics/us-military-ai-false-intelligence-china-ship

apparently, but the reasoning in the article is fairly dubious, for example
>Any US operation against a Chinese vessel could have risked spiraling into an armed conflict between the two nations.
is total bullshit fear-mongering panicbait, "risk spiralling" ffs this is like written by an 18yo intern who knows nothing about geopolitics, conflicts and war, nor US-Sino relations for that matter.

It would've been a nothingburger and at worst a "diplomatic incident" but since China is actively supporting Iran's war and Russia's war notice how that seems to be A-Okay with the author and not at all a risk of "spiralling" out of control.

The story is as much slop as the thing that it's about, which is a real shame because things like this deserve far better journalism and analysis.
