Doesn't expensive gasoline and diesel make investment in American wells financially feasible and if kept high for long enough would spur internal investment that would pay off quick enough that even once prices were lowered the Saudi's would no longer have enough of the international market to be strategically important?
I am pretty sure the Iraq and Afghanistan misadventures as a second order effect triggered the first investment in this and changed the US from a net importer to net exporter in quick order and the Saudis had to shut it down quick but harmed OPEC in the process.
