Why are people still buying this market?
>>
>>542856482

hedging against inflation and it's a very narrow portion of the population buying/propping
>>
>>542856706
isn't nearly everyone working or retired invested one way or another

Because America has one of the best economic futures of advanced economies despite everything.
>>
>>542856899
no. the top 25% of earners own like 85% of all stocks. most people don't own any stocks of note.
>>
>>542856482

Inflation is going to go to the fucking moon. This will be the 2nd major oil shock in my lifetime as I was a kind in the 1970s. People are going to get fucked here.

I mean it's true that most wealth is concentrated at the top, but most working Americans are still relying on market returns for their retirement. It's not true that the stock market doesn't matter to most people. It certainly does!

Banks can literally print themselves infinite money.

Should I sell all my stocks and buy gold?

>has no sustainable systems
>total debt junkie
>US corpos largely reliant on endless debt growth, hyperconsoomerism, and constructive wealth transfers to them
Ok, good luck with that

FOMO and inertia

There's nowhere else to put the money.

This. Everyone is all-in already. It's not like you can escape to some foreign country's investment market, you don't know if typical hedges are worth it and they typically don't grow so they can't be your primary asset, everyone is just working and dumping it in the only place they can.

Yes, the consequences for this will be horrible, but there's more players than ever before so it takes longer for anything to change
>>542857984
I don't know how old you are and how close to retirement you are, but if you're like 30 you have to work another 30 years to retire. The money's not gonna be there in 30 years. Speculating in the stock market right now might not be the best move.

Like every depression is preceded by an oil shock.

yes, this is how they make the ponzi scheme too big to fail. they tell you they will provide for you, gamble the money they take from you in the casino, then justify any bailouts with "it's your retirement money!"

This P/E ratio is only sustainable or makes sense if interest rates go back to 1%

What I don't understand is why the market is priced this way when interest rates are sending an opposing signal. How are these P/E ratios sustainable when judged against the risk-free rate.

This narrative, while true, does not justify the current market valuation. I think it has more to do with 401k accounts buying-stocks-at-any-price. This known market volume is then fleeced by wall-street fund managers.

This is harder to do at 5% interest, since they'll be paying 6% for the privilege of borrowing against boomer stock portfolios that can only go up so as long as the wagie 401k account auto-buys these stocks.

Selling stocks at a profit incurs a taxable event. The current laws are set up in such a way to reward a subset of the population who is able to borrow against their stock (not you, sorry).

Even if you sold your stock some 401k account will just buy them off of you at any price. Remember 401k's are a relatively new phenomena. It was capitalism's answer to the older pension system.
