The radiation continuously degrades everything around it. Explosives and electronics need to be replaced, tritium needs to be purified and replenished, and even the uranium or plutonium need to be refined and recast every few decades.The U.S. spends more on maintaining our nuclear bombs than Russia spends on its whole military, so most of their "nuclear bombs" are probably just radioactive garbage at this point. Unfortunately even a few can do major damage, but as long as they aim those at NYC, DC, SF, Chicago, and Boston, the U.S. would actually be improved by a nuclear war.
