Back in the '20s the Communist Party, USA underwent one of its many splits, half leaving and staying as the CPUSA, the other going somewhat undercover and becoming the Progressive wing of the Democrats. This is all described in the House Report on Un-American Activities, which is worth a read for its nice summary of organized communism in the USA up to the point it was written.They were always just commies, but they wanted to work from within a larger party framework and were afraid they'd be marginalized if they were openly Communist.
