How do I stop overthinking everything and just live like a normal person, taking life day by day? How do I stop replaying situations from 15 years ago and wondering how things might have turned out if I had acted differently? I’m tired of constantly analyzing the past, imagining alternate versions of my life, and thinking about things I can no longer change. How do I learn to let go, stay present, and just live my life as it is now?

In the end I tell him off and explain what a complete retard he is
I usually will have these imaginary arguments a good 5-10 times a day in my mind

Live your life, experience more things, take more risks. The more things you put between yourself and your past, the further in the rearview those unpleasant experiences become.

You need to be nigger-pilling. Fundamentally, the past does not exist, only an electronic remembrance of it. The now is literally the only thing that matters. You can ponder the future, sure, but it's all ultimately uncertain. Furthermore, the only consequences that exist are those that can be placed upon you. Outside of that, they too don't matter. Take the vantablack pill.

Try and keep your mind busy with something else. Reading helped me out a lot when I was younger. Exercise will also help you go to sleep faster. When I first laid down to bed is when my mind would really race.
Alcohol makes things worse. I have about twenty years of experience backing up this opinion. Twenty years of on-and-off again therapy also did dick. I actually think the meds made things worse. My memory is absolute shit, and there is no reason for it to be at my age.
I quit drinking about four years ago, and I've lost 80 pounds. I feel better now than I have since I was a kid.
Religion has also help a bunch.
There is no easy answer, and anyone telling there is one is a liar.

You're young and you're working with the assumption that you have infinite time to waste on shit like irrelevant shit from 15 years ago. The realisation that your life on this earth is finite, that you will, like every other living creature, die, is something that is blackpilling at first but actually something that can motivate you.

As a thought experiment, there are two ways of looking at it. Imagine that someone told you that within the next 5 years you will die. You don't know how, whether it's going to be some cancer years from now or you just get killed suddenly in a freak road traffic accident. You only know that in 5 years it will happen. What changes would you make in your life? Would you still work that job you hated? Obsess over that crush from years ago or try to find a new woman. The timer gives you some perspective and tells you what's important.

The other way to look at is, imagine you could sit down and talk to the 80 year old version of you. What would they say to you? Would they really tell you to keep wasting your youth reminiscing over shit that happened years ago, that you can't change? What advice would they give you? The thing is that you can already just ask older people what regrets they have. And they will tell you that when they were younger they thought certain things were way more important than they were. That they took themselves way too seriously. That they went through a relationship or crush that at the time was a huge deal but now they can barely remember their name. It's things like this that you can glean if you are willing to actually talk to people 60+. Even a retard that wasted 20-30 years of their life will still have some advice to give you. Ignore "general" advice, only listen to personal experience. Boomers often love to repeat the TV, so just ask them about their regrets. A huge part of it will be playing it "too safe" and not taking even small risks like going to work abroad or something like this.

I once parked my car in front of a store and forgot to put the handbrake. Realized I forgot something entering the store and went back. Couldnt see my car anymore because its fucking rolling away, heading for some parked cars. I ran just in time to jump in and press the brakes. One of the luckiest moments of my life.

Look around you. Normal people are crazy. Everyone is crazy. Just enjoy the ride. Don't get murdered, enslaved, or drafted. Be kind to others when you can. That's all you can do.

also if you're serious about it, look into buddhism I'm not even joking. Walpola's "What The Buddha Taught" is a great starting point.
