Here's a theoretical. Imagine you live in some random country in Europe and overnight the leader was replaced by a new one. This guy shows up out of no where and starts acting like he owns the place and starts making rules. Hes carasmatic and Starts fixing the economy, giving good Healthcare, and free gibs. But theres a catch. He starts pushing his own views on the people and bans religion. The guy also got the military on his side with Gibs and shows of violence. How would the general populace react to that? People seem to care more about free stuff and security over any personal beliefs. Would people be willing to go along with it and throw away their faith and culture for Gibs and safty?
