It would however make the boat lighter which would mean that the scene is plausible, considering the bottom is hard sand. Usually it isn't tho. You can try it in a sink with a small glass bottle. The weight of the bottle keeps it down even if there's some air inside. You can't have it full of air but test it with 1/3 or 1/4 or something.
