The precise chain of events that allowed him to get out of sight and lost in the water isnt 100% clear. But its pretty clear what happened: an 18yr old was drunk and high and got swept out further than he could get back and drowned. People act like its this big crazy mystery but this is literally the EXACT thing that lifeguards are looking for at every ocean beach with a lifeguard. This is EXACTLY why they dont even let people go out anywhere near the buoys at most beaches. When you can no longer touch the bottom in ocean water with waves and current it takes an extremely experienced swimmer to not fatigue and risk going under the waves; and when I say waves I am talking about like 2ft tall waves. In actual serious water with real current and 4ft+ tall waves most people should just stay the fuck out of the water all together.99% of people should never go further out than waist deep at an unguarded wild beach known for strong tidal currents near the island.
