With America's 40 trillion dollar national debt, who exactly do we pay the interest to again? Am I missing something or is our entire system a legitimate scam?

It is a big scam also our government representatives accept gifts, bribes and donations so we have no representation.

>With America's 40 trillion dollar national debt, who exactly do we pay the interest to again?
The American state is in debt, no you nor 'we'. You don't pay the interest directly, you either get taxed or the state prints more money to pay for it. The state pays that nterest to whoever is holding those bonds or whatever assets the American state puts out. People can hold those bonds indirectly via their pension funds, so you get taxed and then get paid with those taxes ! Great return

>who exactly do we pay the interest to again?
If you feel 5% is an awesome return on investment you're free to get a job and buy into treasury bonds and it could be you raking in all that cash.
Realistically if you're too stupid to figure out how government borrowing works you probably have no business trying to discuss politics and you should probably just fuck off back to twitter.

Trump is responsible for over a quarter of this. He should have used the good economy he inherited from Obama to increase revenue and decrease spending; but he is a Republican and fiscal conservatism is something they only believe in when out of the White House.

as long as new generations are accustomed to the burden of the debt, who cares? that's why we keep boomers happy. only they actually remember what things were like 40 years ago. most people younger feel like things suck but don't have enough direct experience or education to see how badly and purposefully they've been fucked
>>
>>543172029
>who exactly do we pay the interest to again?
i'm going to make it real simple for you
you had a country
you had a national bank, you decided when to print money for whatever reason you wanted (without interest)
one day a dude came to your president, woodrow wilson and told him sign this.
he did and created the federal reserve
now you pay interest to the federal reserve when you want money like a regular dude going to a bank
there's nothing complex or hidden about it

The overwhelming majority of it is paid to Social Security and American investors. A tiny fraction to foreign governments.

>>543172029
bond holders, basically
if you want a piece of the pie, buy government bonds. You can profit from this right now.
Arguably you will only profit at rates equal to inflation, since the entire point is new money necessarily enters circulation (figuratively) through the maturation of bonds. So it is technically a garbage shit investment, but they are RELIABLE, so the utility is basically in money you have absolutely zero fucking clue what to do with by locking it up for XX years.

Think of it like this - you have kids. You want to send them to school. You technically have the money for tuition right now. Instead of SAVING that money (and having it devalue and be insufficient in 18 years) you buy bonds and having it roughly be worth the same relative tuition costs later.

There are other investment reasons for bonds, even small scale. Have thousands you have no clue what to do with? Already made your max IRA contributions or other retirement options? Bonds are on the table. Better than just saving, since banks will typically offer worse rates over the same periods because they're the ones fucking buying bonds also.

but tl;dr: the debt is owed to (you) if you buy bonds.

It's a slow ass profit don't make it sound like it's quick.
>>
The banks/foreign countries loan money to the treasury because it's seen as a safe investment.

The treasury pays them interest.

When the federal reserve wants to, it prints money and buys the loans away from the banks.

This is when interest rates go down. Because the fed is buying up all the loans. I don't understand how that part works but it sounds like the scarcity of loans on the market caused by the fed buying them all up means that when the treasury asks to borrow money at 0% interest, people still loan it to them, because they are so desperate for somewhere safe to park their funds.

And this can even go negative, like in europe all the governments were borrowing money at negative interest after 2008. Banks and countries still loaned them the money because it is seen as a stable place to put your funds.
>>
>>543174327
>when you can just buy the t-bill yourself...
That's the funny part goyim, you can't do that everywhere.
>>
>>543172029
they pay it with new debt that they issue
same thing as with treasury bills or even the commercial paper that companies might print
>>
>>543172459
Don't bonds have a minimum price of like 100k? They aren't a very easy investment
>>
>>543174200
Alright but doesn't that all go out the window when the fed keeps interest rates at 0%?
>>
Some of the interest goes to American companies and investors, but the majority is owned by other countries. The Federal Reserve owns $5T, Foreign countries $9T, Mutual funds $4T, US citizens and companies $7T and Social Security Trust $3T.

All of the top 5 countries that hold US debt reduced their positions this year - Japan, UK, China, Belgium and Canada. Peter is probably pretty close on the interest amount at $2T - it is currently $900B or $3/day. Nobody wants the debt anymore as it is too risky. The US for the last few years has been running a $2T deficit on their budget items. They expect the world to buy this debt allow them to print another $2T in money. The world is at the end of the line now. Not only will they not be buying that debt, but they will be selling it.

The only way to continue this farce is make a budget that doesn't have any borrowing. That means basically cutting Social security, Medicare and Medicaid to nothing. Boomers will roar, but fuck them. Somehow you have to live within your means and only spend the $5T you collect in taxes.

They won't do this and instead will really just run the money printer and buy their own debt. This will make the USD$ funny money. This is a good plan, but the USD$ is the world's reserve currency. When people decide it is worthless, a lot of that paper could come home quickly and hyperinflate out of control. The sort of nice thing about hyperinflation is you can basically pay the whole National debt off with what would buy you a hamburger today.

The scary thing is, this isn't a maybe this could happen. It is happening now. Imagine all of your credit cards are at limit, the banks decide you are risky and raise all your interest rates, then the banks start to reduce your credit limits ... and you still have massive bills to pay for on going wars.

I do wonder how screwed the next Dem President will be in 2029. The tax base has been eroded by years of expanding deductions and credits. You could introduce a Wealth Tax, but it wouldn't touch the sides in terms of revenue. As much as people hate to admit it, low and middle-income Americans pay next to no tax in their everyday lives. If you added up all the tax increases Democrats want, you still have a deficit in excess of $1 trillion. You can't cut defense spending because manufacturing. Zero room for manuever. Then social security is due to go bankrupt anyway.
>>
>>543174200
Investors don't want to buy the bonds because their returns wont match inflation. That's why the rate is going up retard.
>>
>>543172029
You spent it on wars, midnight basket programs, illegals, covid stimulus, etc.

It works like your personal debt. The "debt" is paid back to the Fed who pretty much burns the money (serouisly)

Your taxes are literally not needed to fund the government. Not one dime. They print what they need and destroy it when it's "repaid"

It's an interesting scam really. Brilliant from the top looking down
>>
>>543174635

>>
>>543176532

We can't tax our way out of this; it will require massive cuts in spending and raising taxes. This will never happen because the voters will just vote out anyone who does it. So we're just slowly circling the drain, once America collapses the entire world will fall into chaos since a lot of current governments are propped up by the dollar
>>
>>543177244

they print money and lend it without interest to jewish banks so those banks can buy future payments from the US government.
so we are basically debasing our own money so that we can owe future money to jews.
by "we" i mean the jews who run our government who were employed by the bond-owning banks before and after their government positions
>>
>>543172029
The average citizen. The government borrows money that (You) have to pay back to pay for Boomers to retire and non-whites to live off of welfare.

By the way, the military, even right now during war time, isn't even the 3rd largest expenditure. Even if we completely shut down our military, we would still have a deficit.

Pensions and foreign governments, eg Japan and the European countries own a lot of US bonds. Any time they posed of with the US they can sell some and then the US has to issue bonds with a higher interest rate if it wants to take on more debt. Bondholders get paid first before any other federal spending.
