They really weren’t. During the romantic era, the Vikings were put forward as the subjects of all kinds of warrior fantasy so all the Germanic countries began invoking them as military symbols and continue to do so. 2 of our SEAL teams had Viking and Pirate patches and flags for like 30 years.
