inflation mostly. my retirement account has 3x'd since 2018 and it's mostly S&P500. some of that is the businesses becoming more valuable, but a lot of it is just the valuations went up because it takes more dollars to do anything. revenues are up because stuff a company sold for $5 now sells for $10...and the stock market works on multiples. hence, you have a chart that looks like this...

Because the stock market has literally nothing to do with whether a business is successful or productive, dumbass. A company drowning in debt that makes no money can still have an enormous stock price because it's all just speculation between parties that don't even necessarily care about the company. This is why shareholders always ruin everything you love. They plan to cash out if a company and so demand the stock price be as high as possible when they do even if it destroys the company long-term, and it is a legal obligation for the company to obey their suicidal wishes.
