But this is based on local/regional communist party information, which is biased towards overstatement because it allows local officials to get more money from the highly centralized state. You go to the regional cities and they are underpopulated slums, with whole neighborhoods being uninhabited post-apocalyptic wastelands. Small rural cities that on paper should have several hundred thousand people in them, you go to the middle of the city in the middle of the day and there's clearly only 1/10th of the population that should be living there. Rural populations would also be smaller because of the one child policy favoring males, leading to tens of millions of more males than females. The women moved into the cities, leading so many rural villages and towns basically bereft of any women under the age of 40. Stick all these things together, and it would genuinely surprise me if they had more than a billion people, and that number is going to crash through the floor over the next 25 years. China will be smaller than the United States by the end of the century, unironically.
