Martin Luther of Eisleben was a Catholic. He was born of a Catholic mother, received the Catholic sacrament of baptism, and grew up in a Catholic town in the Holy Roman Empire. As a young man, he studied Catholic theology, celebrated Catholic feasts and holy days, and went on pilgrimages to Catholic churches. And, when he was in his early thirties, he began to preach in Catholic parishes about the interpretation of Catholic doctrine, proclaiming the need for reform to the Catholic people. At the very height of his life, he debated Catholic scholars, was tried by the Catholic council of priests and elders known as the Diet of Worms, and was excommunicated outside the great Catholic city of Rome. Above his writings hung a declaration that read in Latin: “Martin Luther, Enemy of the Papal Bull.”As this list demonstrates, the Catholicism of Martin Luther is a historical fact. But is it important? If Luther was a real person who really lived in history, then the answer must be “Yes.” To be sure, over the centuries, Protestant theologians have written books about Luther that don’t spend much time studying his Catholic context. Much of the effort has gone into exploring the question of his role in the Reformation. However, for anyone interested in exploring the humanity of Luther—especially the original meaning of his words and actions—a focus on his Catholic identity is absolutely necessary. Luther was a historical figure, living in a particular time and place. Therefore, any attempt to understand his words and deeds must reckon with the fact that Luther lived in a medieval Catholic context. Although on a few occasions Luther welcomed non-Catholics who accepted his teachings, he himself declared that his initial goal was not to destroy Catholicism but to reform it from within. This means that virtually all of his early writings were directed to a Catholic audience in a Catholic setting.
Catholics pray to little clay statues. The one thing we KNOW God hates.
>>543251764Luther's maternal grandmother, who was Ziegler.https://www.geni.com/people/Margarethe-Luther/6000000002545032014Margaretha Ziegler's maiden name was Rosenzweig. Her mother was a von Saalfeld, not only Jewish but noble. If we keep going, we find von Meiningen, von Monningen, von Meldigen, von Apolda, and von Bornstedt of Bornstedt Castle. The von Meldingens were Grafs (Counts) of Thuringen. Proving Luther's mother was not middle class, but from many noble lines. We also find the Kellners and Hutteners.through the Ziegler line, Luther was also a . . . von der Sachsen. These Sachsen were the Dukes of Saxony. Yes, these von der Sachsen are the same as the Saxes, direct ancestors of the Queen Elizabeth. Remember, Luther's mother died and was buried in SaxonyAnhalt. Her grandmother was a von der Sachsen, so Luther was that close to the Dukes of Saxony. Geni finally scrubs this, refusing to list children of these von Sachsen, so we can't find out there who Luther's noble cousins were. But his contemporary was Duke Magnus I of Saxe Lauenburg, grandson of Frederick II, Elector of Brandenburg. Magnus married the Princess of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel. Their daughters became Queens of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. It looks to me like Luther was a third cousin of these people, tying him very closely to the ruling houses of Europe.

>>543254961>>543254696>>543255887The Lutheran Church fixed the property issues of priest marriage. The Catholic Church originally outlawed priest marriage because they were passing down church property to their family members. The Catholic priests and bishops administered church property, marriage, and inheritances. The Lutheran Churches fixed this by making Lutheran Church property and local parish finances administered by the State. Tithes were also collected by the Lutheran Princes through their civil authority and via consistories which were a combination of State employed theologians and civil servants. The State began to administer/register marriages and by extension inheritances. There wasn't room for a priest to just straight up steal State administered property and funds, unlike in the Catholic Church. The Lutheran Counties and Duchies of the HRE along with the Scandinavian Monarchs would block any attempt to pass on State Property or Administered funds since they now oversaw inheritances and church assets/finances instead of the Church.
>>543256320>The Lutheran Church fixed the property issues of priest marriage. The Catholic Church originally outlawed priest marriage because they were passing down church property to their family members. The Catholic priests and bishops administered church property, marriage, and inheritances.Dominion Short - Martyrdom of a peasant leading to chastity of Priests and the Expansion of a Pope's authorityIn the 1070's, Christianity had spread to Europe, usurped other pagan religions and even hollowed them out to fill them with Christian themes. A notable example is the celebration of Jesus' Passion, Death, and Resurrection's name in Latin languages is derived from Passover, yet in English, it was named Easter, where Easter was based on the Anglo Goddess Eostre. In effort to convert Anglo and Saxon pagans, missionaries opted to take elements and redefine them in Christian terms to help usher the mass conversion of the bible. One peasant, 100 miles away from Milan, in the town of Cambrai, by the name of Ramihrd, had a profound dream. He dreamt of a swarm of bees entering his anus. The revelation of this dream was the iniquities of the clergy. They were far from true Christians and the church was polluted with sin. At this point, Christianity was under way under the guidance of the Catholic Church but the source of sin was this contradiction; monks and nuns were called to be chaste and yet the priests and bishops who presided over them were married. Ramihrd set to work to preach this clear contradiction. It reached the point where his fame brought the attention of one bishop who invited him to celebrate the Eucharist with him. But Ramihrd rejected him on the basis that he was too sinful to be able to perform such a sacrament. The bishops' servants seized him and burned him for this rejection.
>>543256393This isn't the first case of heresy, but this certainly drew a ton of attention and outcry, so much that it reached the Pope at the time. This was the catalyst for a future Pope, Hildebrand who became Pope Gregory VII. Gregory VII took to heart the events and the genuine criticism of the corrupt church and instituted various reforms. Public enemy #1 was the hypocrisy of monks being called to chastity but not Priests. It was even reported during this reform that an angel appeared to a church as a priest celebrated eucharist with his congregation. The angel scrubbed the priest down from a bucket of water and spilt it over his head; black water revealing how dirty the priest was whose reputation was otherwise spotless. In tears he confessed to his congregation that he had slept with his servant girl just the previous night.Public enemy #2 was restricting the authority of kings. Kings could choose their bishops meaning these bishops would have a conflict of interest between serving a king's will at the expense of God's will. Gregory VII not only put a stop to that and even stepped into unprecedented boundary of excommunicating King Henry IV. No pope had done such a thing, but the clergy and laity seized on the opportunity of challenging and ultimately rebelling against the King in favor of the Pope. It came to the point where the King found himself in a snowy field outside of the castle where the Pope lodged for 3 days, barefoot, desperate to receive forgiveness and grace and be restored. He ultimately was granted grace with a kiss and open arms but the message was clear. Matthew 22:21They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.A continued evolution of separation of church and state in Christian history. Kings, keep your butt out of the religious business.
>>543255960>Early reformers could have a jewish connection It goes much further than a mere jewish connection, anonThe whole Reformation originated with jewish 'converts' larping as anti-semites, and northern humanists (and kabbalists) springing to the defense of jewsThe Reformation was a matter of life and death for jews at the time, since they were expelled from almost all of catholic Western EuropeWhich goes to show that 1) in theory, christianity could have emancipated itself from the jews but 2) due to its jewish origins, jews had an easy entry into the intellectual heart of christendom

>>543251764Historians don't generally care as much about Martin Luther before he was at odds with the Catholic Church because it's just not historically significant in contrast to what happened afterwards. His time as a law student and then as a Augustinian Monk is more of interest to people interested in Church History than the historical events of Europe. His time of feeling underworthy of God's Grace as a monk or studying what legal codes say shaping the Solas isn't of interesting to European Events. At first Luther was protected by the Duke of Saxony, since he was the Dukes subject. He was quesitoned in Saxony in 1518, but he kept writing letters. But then in 1519-1520, more got printed. Then it really made the Catholic Authorities and Emperor mad. He was summoned to Worms where they attempted to arrest him in 1521 and he was fake kidnapped by the Duke of Saxony. The Lutheran Princes could then could seize Church Property, install their own priests and bishops, collect tithes, and regulate property. They also now had a degree of independence from the Pope and the Emperor. At this point he was an Outlaw. There was some revolts such as the Peasants Revolt. Both Catholic and Lutheran forces crushed the revolt. In 1531 the Schmalkaldic League was formed by Lutheran Counts and Dukes in the Empire to oppose the Emperor. The Munster Rebellion happened in 1534 when some Anabaptists rose up in Munster, killed the Archbishop, and created a proto-Communist state... Luther died in 1546. Then in the 1547 and 1552 the Schmalkaldic wars happened (there were two). The second concluded with the Peace of Augsburg (1555) where Catholicism was to be the State Relgion in the land of Catholic Princes and Bishoprics, and likewise Lutheranism was to be the religion in Lutheran Counties and Duchies. Calvinism and other forms of Protestant Christianity at this point were still illegal in the HRE. Despite this, the Palatinate converted officially to Calvinism in 1559.
>Papists don't have the theology to refute Protestantism so they resort to ad hominem against LutherYou do realize we don't see Luther as the Pope, right? We don't have to defend his integrity or any shit like that. We defend God, not men.

>>543256393>>543256419>>543257408The story the church has about the reasons it made Priest Marriage illegal in the Gregorian Reforms sounds pretty cool. It's just not the full story. Historians don't buy it. The church needs to create a reason as to why it did something, but the real reasons are obvious. Many of the Gregorian Reforms had a lot to do with Church Property in general. The control over church assets, land, titles, and money was also one of the reasons the Investiture Controversy started between Pope Gregory VII and the HRE Emperor Henry IV. This caused the first Antipope to be declared by the HRE. This wouldn't be the only one. There was Gregory VIII who was the French/Spanish Antipope over Investiture. Investiture was resolved, but later on there was the Avignon Papacy and Western Schism. The Papacy was then again on the backfoot via de facto Investiture by controlling Church finances. During Gregory VII's time, Catholic Church was losing control of assets, titles, and wealth on multiple fronts. From the Dukes, Kings, and Emperor via Investiture. But also, from the Clergy itself via Clergy Marriage. Nepotism persisted though throughout the Reformation until 1692 when it was fully banned. Bishops and Popes used their Nephew and Relatives to launder assets, funds, and titles.
>>543258112thank god these didn't procreate, or did they?
>>543258293>The story the church has about the reasons it made Priest Marriage illegal in the Gregorian Reforms sounds pretty cool. It's just not the full story. Historians don't buy it. The church needs to create a reason as to why it did something, but the real reasons are obvious.I suppose I neglected to mention or perhaps I underplayed that there were rebellions and actual bloodshed that Pope Gregory's reforms helped quell. The bishop who executed the peasant in the story had to hide within compounds of a noble to not be killed off and had to come begging on his knees for forgiveness. To disregard and say "it was a matter of property and asset reconciliation to improve financial standing" strips it of the human influence. What major change comes about as a matter of improving for the sake of improving? People are not going to rock the boat. Christian history is littered with specific moments of people taking action with passion and driving the religion forward.
