Nationalism was pioneered by Napolean. The basic idea is to smash up all the internal divisions within the county and unite everyone under one big national culture, with the same god, the same leader, the same national spirit. With internal divisions solved, the country can now project power outward and get a huge military power. At that time, Germany was a collection of little principalities, each with their own culture, customs, accent....etc. Napolean cleaved through it like a knife through butter, they couldn't stop him. So after this, Otto von Bismarck decided to unite Germany into one national state. They broke up and smashed all these little cultures and groups, and united everyone into one big nation. With internal divisions solved, they became a mighty industrial powerhouse. Because of this development, they started taking more territory. As Pat Buchanan argues, this was just the natural course of history. Whenever a European nation gets strong, it starts expanding its borders, and they form a natural balance. But to England, this was intolerable. WW1 happened, which demolished European society and hollowed out the aristocracy. Then the stage was set for WW2, which would hollow out Europe permanently. The absolute apex of European civilization was the late Victorian era. The best literature, art, architecture...everything. It was all downhill from there. A catastrophic series of choices, nontheleast of which was the decision not to colonize Africa. Europe could have been so grand.
