Church isn't for God, it's for you. It's so you have to at least sacrifice a tiny little bit every week by using your own time to get up, get ready, go to church, sit there and spend time with God before going home again. It's so you are reminded that a relationship with God isn't supposed to be all on your terms where he chases you down and comes to you, no matter where you are. He does do that and you don't have to go to church, but it's a thing you do to remind yourself that he's not just your genie in a bottle that serves you but that you have to do some things for him too. Churches are supposed to be beautiful places because humans have a natural tendency to gather their most valuable and treasured possessions and display them in a place dedicated to what they worship. This is why they put the most intricate stained glass windows in churches and put gold leaf on everything. It's to remind us that we are in a place of reference, where people come to bring their most valuable items, their souls, to offer them to God. It's supposed to be places that took decades to finish because the enless hours of work that went into it are symbolic sacrifices to show that we don't take God's grace for granted, that even though we don't have to, we want to somehow show our love and gratefulness in ways that are more visible than our behavior - which is the actual gift that brings most joy to God.
