Here were the very pillars Hercules himself erected, alongside an altar, and date palms. This situation was maintained all the way into the Roman era and it was a custom to sacrifice at the altar before a journey through.You can't find a thing about this, even though it's attested in ancient accounts, as well as on coins and inscriptions. I myself only learned about it from Purchas, His Pilgrimes. AND I'm particularly clued in.
You might notice the 'pillars' are merely gilgal (in Punic and Phoenecian and Hebrew), upright stones.Hercules was a major god of the Phoenecians and Punic people and their patron.

I was lucky enough to buy the whole set for only $900, it comes in many many volumes. That's cheap. If you want to "buy it now" it's many thousands of dollars.I was inspired to purchase Purchas because there are only scans of a few of the volumes on the Internet Archive.
