Pillars of Hercules is often thought to refer to the opposite sides of the Strait of Gibraltar, but in reality it refers to a Phoenecian, Punic, and later Greek and finally Roman shrine, on the north shore just inside the Med. Here were the very pillars Hercules himself erected, alongside an altar, and date palms. This situation was maintained all the way into the Roman era and it was a custom to sacrifice at the altar before a journey through. You can't find a thing about this, even though it's attested in ancient accounts, as well as on coins and inscriptions. I myself only learned about it from Purchas, His Pilgrimes. AND I'm particularly clued in.
You might notice the 'pillars' are merely gilgal (in Punic and Phoenecian and Hebrew), upright stones.Hercules was a major god of the Phoenecians and Punic people and their patron.

>two names from two cultures for the same essential thing or person means one is fakeThat's classic midwittery, in fact it strenghtens the case historically every time.In any event the ancient Phonenecians and Punics and Greeks and Romans don't need to think about this, to have had an altar there. So what's your point exactly?
Are the 10 comendments considered pillars of anything? Were they written on two tablets?
the twin pillars may still even be therealtar possibly too, there would be a harborsounds crazy but I located the wrecks of all three of the obelisk ships the romans used to transport the three biggest obelisks from egypt to europeright where they were said to be

Nope, not Cadiz. It's on the other side. You had to visit it when LEAVING the Med before transiting the Strait. On the north side. Pillars were 10, 20 foot tall, couldn't miss 'em.
BTW Purchas His Pilgrimes is great. You will learn information in there that will absolutely blow your mind.
I was lucky enough to buy the whole set for only $900, it comes in many many volumes. That's cheap. If you want to "buy it now" it's many thousands of dollars.I was inspired to purchase Purchas because there are only scans of a few of the volumes on the Internet Archive.

I could make hundreds of threads like this one, tidbits that even the experts just failed to properly notice, or intentionally glossed over. Makes you wonder about many aspects of history, if a nosy amater can discover things like this everywhere and everywhen I look.
