The real answer for cars anyway, the auto industry designed in obsolsence, that is to say, a component and or system must be completey replaced. It cannot be repaired. ExampleA head light goes out. I was looking into fixing the antenna myself when I found that they designed it in such a way that you cannot simply replace the antenna or the housing cover on its own. You have to buy an entire roof assembly that they sell for $600 that requires you to pull the interior roof upholstery and trim out in order to run wires along the roof up to the antenna housing. If you don't replace it, you will have the antenna PCB exposed on your roof for the remaining life of the car.
Cars have been made too complex. They now have tond of electrical parts now that used to be mechanical. They're hard or even impossible to repair without specific and expensive tools.
