Regime relaxed when attempting modernization, perestroika and glasnost. Nationalism arose in occupied areas and they gained independence. Vodkaniggers were too stupid and corrupt to really modernize so it all went to shit till a KGB guy after Ryazan sugar incident took over with his oligarch buddies and kept just enough order in Russia that the peasants wouldn't revolt, even maintaining the great patriotic war identity from commie times. It is very unfortunate for the Russian people.
