When tanks were filled or cars were refueled, displaced gasoline vapor often escaped directly into the atmosphere. Modern stations use much better vapor-control systems, while modern cars have onboard systems that capture vapors during refueling. Gasoline formulations have also changed over the decades, affecting volatility and therefore how much vapor is produced. So the strong, almost omnipresent gasoline smell many people remember from stations in the 1970s–90s wasn't necessarily nostalgia or imagination—it really was associated with substantially greater vapor emissions. Modern stations simply contain much more of that vapor.
