I don't think commercial AIs are close to being apocalyptically dangerous by themselves. The danger is more likely coming from simple automation, rendering the masses useless. You could argue people couldn't even handle living in a UBI society and masses could be seen as a liability. When you think about robotics, isn't a human body quite capable? Low energy cost etc. I believe we would need to develop cybernetics and perhaps genetic engineering to make people better before having an automated society. Though, this would mean preservation of random human life is the top priority which it probably isn't.DARPA and adjacents have been researching AI since the 1950s and brain-computer interaces for some decades and they did develop the internet, so I wonder if they have had some more evolved AI around for some time now.
