My grandfather's family came from Trentino-Alto Adige around WW1. My uncle is really into genealogy and went over there in the '70s and found and reconnected with our cousins there, and he and my mom are still in touch with them now. I went to visit with my parents way back in '03 and everybody was pretty cool, a couple of my cousins had spent time in the US for one reason or another so they spoke fluent English and we got along well. That was also a time when US-Europe relations were a lot better than they are now though. My family also don't larp as Italian the way a lot of the gabagool types do. On the food subject, the stuff I had there was great but it wasn't what an American would even recognize as Italian food. Some was more like what we'd think of as German or Alpine (schnitzel etc.) and others were totally new to me like veal in tuna sauce. Like one of the other anons in the thread I've never been to the south though (we started in Rome and headed north from there) so I can't compare southern/Sicilian food to the common American stuff based on it.
