Total isolationism won't work in (((today's world))) by flipping the import switch overnight. Modern companies operate on just-in-time factory and assembly lines and a lot of industries would be crippled by such a move, especially automobile manufacture and raw goods imports such as steel and lumber from Canada and oil from the Gulf. Not to mention net exporter companies collapsing from being cut off from global market share.Isolationism could work for the US I think, but it would take a decade of economy restructuring to pull off.

But to practically achieve that we would need to remove a number of issues which prevent us from properly keeping out of global affairs. However once those issues are dealt with we are pretty good from there. These days the main issue is a scarcity of work. The reality is the economy is so efficient, that we don't need like 90% of the population anymore. So what to do with them? Create jobs out of nothing.By disengaging from the global economy, you are harming efficiency. Everyone knows this, it's basic economics. But, remember we don't want efficiency, we want jobs. So in a sense, harming efficiency, with regard to working class type jobs, is actually good. We're handing jobs to the 90% of otherwise useless people. Might as well use them right?In that sense, yes the US could cut off most global trade. But one issue I think is resources. We need rubber, and beans, and uranium, and whatever else. So the US, if it was to go alone so to speak, would need some sort of empire that dominates other countries for the sake of their resources.
