There was no unified vision of what Brexit was to look like, and those that did articulate things were often contradictory. You can find people in the Tories who pushed some libertarian vision, others promising more money for everything and statism, and others saying how we could let in more Indians and former Commonwealthers instead of giving europeans an easy ride. The latter two if anything won out

We were all well aware that Poles were simply sending their wages home in remittances so that made the EU migrant worker scheme look pretty uninviting. There was the mattet of money paid to Brussels. There was the matter of EU governance, HR laws and specifically the EUCHR being used as the reason to be unable to deport unwanted foreigners. There was the matter of VAT which was supposed to be a temporary measure when we joined the common market in 71. There was the broader issue of the euro itself. There were many other factors, but under pinning it all is the motivation behind the referendum which was that we never voted to join and if it had been put to a vote, we would never have joined.People see that our political class see themselves as a jet set inturdnationalist class, uninterested in domestic affairs and failing to do the will of the people. People also don't see themselves as European. We have no brothers in Europe.
