China is not a "backwards country", true, you can say it's not yet reached the maximum development potential it may one day get to, but in this picture you see everyone has modern manufactured clothes, people have modern smart phones, in fact China is one of the leading countries of the world in terms of adapting to new technologies in this way, almost all payments are digital, through alipay or weixin, they even have face/palm payment which we don't even have in the West yet.Yet despite China's technological development the people still have a backwards mentality. Their people have no manners or respect, spitting on the street, abusing animals, and behaving like the animals they abuse.Culturally they produce nothing, their biggest "cultural export" is just gacha games, which are soulless money grab copy-paste slop of anime, that is to say Japanese culture. They even market them internationally in Japanese (Genshin instead of Yuánshén) as if they were Japanese games.The government's priorities regarding development are also warped. They subsidize old diesel trains to ferry peasants to barbaric and outdated markets that spread disease instead of creating modern food supply chains. This while boasting that they have the greatest high speed rail network in the world.What is the cause of this parallel development? Why were other East Asian countries (Korea, Japan) able to properly modernize and throw off their old backwards and outdated practices but China still keeps them around? Is this ever likely to change, and all of China will be uplifted to first world standards like their flagship cities (Shanghai, Chongqing) or will there always be this underclass of retarded peasants living as if it were still the 19th century, inexplicably supported by the state?
I used to revere Japan. On the one hand I see the Chinese webm threads and the casual death; I've watched Serpentza expose all the corruption and stupid shit like painting leaves green and gutter oil and I know about the social credit and mass surveillance. But I've been three times now (although before the social credit shit) and each time it's been one of the most enjoyable countries I've visited. The people were actually friendly and helpful everywhere I went. Taxi drivers were honest (it remains, to this day, the ONLY country I've ever been where the taxi drivers didn't try and scam me. I've heard other people say Japan is like this too). I didn't speak a word of Mandarin other than "thank you" and yet, despite only knowing the Chinese symbols for beef, chicken and pork I've gone entire months there and never had a single bad meal. Once with a friend we would ask each other what we ordered and it would be "chicken something, I'll know when it gets here". And travelling around really wasn't too much of a problem, provided you had a map you could point to with Chinese place names. It'll be even easier now with translator apps on your phone. So my advice is "don't let the webm threads put you off going if you get the chance". You'll likely enjoy it. Vietnam, on the other hand, has but one person who didn't try to scam me. The lovely Mango at a restaurant in Hue. And the first meal I was served was barbecued dog, which they only told me halfway through eating it. (It's like really tough gristly lamb, if you're interested).

You can’t upgrade hukou (internal passport) without a bunch of documentation showing social insurance payments, stable urban employment history, housing application in urban area etc.You can’t get that without education and money. So peoples entire lives in China are decided by their level of education, ties to the party, etc. To move from rural to tier 1 it’s essentially impossible without higher education, party ties, etc. They do this because otherwise all the uneducated and people like OPs picture would move to tier 1 cities for the sake of their children. It’s not illegal to live outside of hukou area, but then they can’t use benefits, their kids can’t take entrance exam for college, and the kids can’t go to school or they’ll have to pay an exorbitant fee. There are private schools that do cater to rural to urban migrants but it takes up much of their parents income.
