There will be a much higher supply of machinists dropping your wage to basically nothing and completely eliminating any sense of job security you ever had. And let's be real, it's not like you had great job security to begin with. Blue collar is the peak of fungible labor units unless you're some absolute 1 in 5 trillion genetic freak, which you're not.Society is a closed system, a zero-sum game. You don't live in a vacuum. >>543493506my....job?
>>543494142>I get headhunted at least once a weekYou're so full of shit lol. Just stfu lmao.
>>543495033No, I understand quite well. Show me a clip of a machine taking the die out after a major break (say 14 pieces because an operator stamped too many in the die) then weld those random pieces back to together and make it cut metal again whilst keeping the part in QC specs.Go ahead.
>>543494476Every time something like a die or machine tool breaks it’s almost always because an operator or shitty programmer or some other version of human error caused a crash or deferred maintenance. The more automated things get the less they’ll fail, and the less things fail the more economical it is to just replace anything that breaks instead of trying to fix it. Eventually manufacturing will be split into two tiers, the first being high end, high energy local automated manufacturing making anything big or super high end. The second being distributed, disposable, automated, AI optimized 3D-printing/table top machine tools/mobile CMMs that are capable of not just building themselves, but reverse engineering, manufacturing and assembling their own structures even without explicitly remembering its own CAD/CAM or engineering. One day it’ll get to the point where both CAD/CAM and repair is completely obsolete and any computer anywhere with a proper suite of machine tools that can sustain their own ecosystem is self replicating without any human intervention or dedicated software. The only bottlenecks in the system will be energy and raw materials
>>543494304Tool and Die is honestly an art form. I have done some manual machining, some 3, 4 5 axis and wire EDM CNC work. I want to get out the trade as I have concerns over breathing in cutting fluids and metal particulates.
>>543493506Ai is capable of what is in picrel. If it's unrelated I would say, without knowing what your job is: "by now". They opened a door you can't shut anymore. Like 'Pandoras Box'. Maybe not now. Or in a decade. But give it a Century and even these guys holding balloons for kids, at a festival or community party, are all robots (using Ai). The problem is that it has the potential to lead us, as humans, to other galaxies, to flee the death of our one own. But I doubt we will live long enough because we WILL use it for other reasons. That said, no matter what your job is, the job itself is null and void - in the future.
>>543494225I have done some CNC and manual lathe work, I find it more monotonous than milling or mill turn 5 axis stuff. That said knurling on a manual mill is downright relaxing.

>>543493629If you had any understanding of the world, you would know that CNC machines have existed for decades and Machinists are still gainfully employed across Western countries.
>>543495301I worked at a shop that made automation robotics, it is still a long way off from totally replacing humans.
>>543495057It's all just higher levels of hardness cutting lower levels hardness, and then wearing out eventually anyways. Think of it like a game of rock paper scissors with diamond at the top, hundreds of metals in the middle steps, and you use something shitty and soft at the bottom (rock) to break the top into little pieces.
>>543493506CNC replaced manual machining 50 years ago, moron. You really think AI won't be able to figure out how to load some g-code and press the start button?
>>543493506It's another tradecuck thread. The thread where some room temp IQ retarded tradie tries to gloat about his slave-tier manual labor job and how much money he "totally" makes even though a quick Google search immediately proves his figures wrong! Man, I'm sure jealous, tradecuck, that I get to make 50% to 100% more than you in sanity working conditions in a heated/AC'd office, work no more than 40 hours a week, and am in better physical condition than you!Kill yourself
>>543495487The biggest problem is the software which is just around the corner from becoming recursively self improving. A program like masterCAM has something like 100,000 man years of programming that went into it. Now imagine an AI that can do engineering so efficiently on the fly that it doesn’t even need CAD/CAM, it just in situ spits out code that’s superior to anything human generated, and whatever it shit out of its ass in five seconds is infinitely superior to the entire sum of human CAD/CAM. Standardization, interchangeable parts, all of that shit will become obsolete. AIs will be able to fit to form everything effortlessly just mapping its own infrastructure.
>>543495553It's not that easy, retard. They're working on ai generated programming and they suck ass right now and only do three axis machining.
>>543495209The thing about "replacing everything" is just very unlikely to happen. You would need to order very expensive parts in multiple quantities to ensure that down time remains at a minimum. Every minute that a line isn't running means the company is losing money (and possibly contracts) and the company that uses these parts to create their products (I work with MAJOR car companies) could be down costing massive money to whichever company caused them to shut down. Most of the parts, which is a multitude of for each die, costs hundreds, mostly thousands, of dollars to make so ordering multiples us unwise. Not to mention most parts go through a line so there are a lot of dies. A lot. A lot of parts in each die. Also sometimes it's a small thing like a gas spring going out. Or a regular spring just breaking. Who will diagnose that? I don't see a machine diagnosing that. That the part is out of spec, sure. But I could find the problem by looking at the die.
>>543493506he looks like an overfed coomer
>>543493506???
>>543495405They sure do weld that shit fast and well. That takes the operations job. It's programmed for that specific weld. Now take a broken die, randomly broken, stick it in that machine and tell it to make a cutting edge.
>>543493506Thank you for your service wagie.
>>543493506Have your scraped your own surface plate?
>>543495553It’s not merely a matter of loading in G code and pushing a button. There have been instances I can think of where the engineers designed parts a specific way and those parts needed to basically be reengineered on the shop floor to make them machinable, often times they do not take things like fixturing into account. Even with solid fixturing tool wear exists, you cannot expect a machine to account for the fact it’s endmill has worn down a bit and make an adjustment of .0005”. Again, I have worked at shops with major customers like Amazon & Lockheed making robots to speed up the automation of the work place and we are a long long way off from having a fully automated shop floor even with Mastercam or Fusion 360 and bar feeders pushing stock into 5 axis turn mills. Even the “dark factories” need set up guys to tend to the machines and ensure they don’t crash. Say you have a spot drill that breaks on a lathe, that creates a sequence of tool crashes, I have never had it happen to me, but it does happen…spot drill breaks, drill crashes, tap crashes…parts get scrapped, costs the shop time and money.
>>543495763I work in an air conditioned clean machine shop 40 hours a week.Does anybody even know what a modern machine shop looks like? It seems like people still imagine a shitty brick building with huge windows for lighting and a splatter mark on a wall where someone got hit with a part from a lathe.

>>543496354I don’t assume I’m getting shit. It’s just the way things are heading. >>543494449Who do you think is programming these things, retard.
>>543496121Everything you’re describing is limitations of conventional machine tool programming, which are basically just really fancy long winded canned cycles that repeat and assume ideal parameters with no deviation or wear. Once the system can dynamically optimize the inputs/outputs and map/observe its own processes and status better than a human observer than the computer will outperform in the last roles humans are still relevant.
>>5434935061. You don't have that job2. Lathes got replaced by propgrammable lathes an eternity ago3. Ai is taking over
>>543496849This is because programs are still written by humans and non-computerized machine tools are still more cheaply operated by a human than an android. That won’t be the case forever
>>543493506One way or another you're getting replaced. If your job is paying you enough to live comfortably they are scheming a way to push you out. Whether that's a robot driven by AI or a jeet being driven by AI it really amounts to the same thing at the end of the day as far as you're concerned.
>>543497011Wrong on all accounts.
>>543494142If your skillset can be learned in a six month apprenticeship, then expect unemployed people who already proved they can study for 4+ years to pick it up. >>543493506AI won't replace you, but people replaced by AI will make it much less profitable.
>>543493506If we get to a generation of AI that triggers mass layoffs of all white collar workers, the economy grinds to a halt and you will almost certainly also lose your blue collar job. In the event that you somehow miraculously don't, super intelligent AI will be pushing out all-purpose robots that are better at all blue collar work than humans in probably less than a decade from its birth.
>>543496121>you cannot expect a machine to account for the fact it’s endmill has worn down a bit and make an adjustment of .0005”Uh, what?3D printer slicers can do trivial flow rate compensations "on the fly" so adjusting for tool wear on subtractive manufacturing CAM is not some insanely impossible idea. The problem is gcode is an ancient system that was never meant to be updated during runtime. There is active research trying to change that to fix exactly the problem you're describing.

Secondly, button pushers don't need much specialized training, they're basically there to babysit the machine. And lastly, AI is probably going to be employed to program parts pretty soon, which means us programmers and operators won't be in demand.
>>543500497Its more of a qualification for different jobs

I've hit my hand on it a few times and there wasn't anything for it to catch on so it was just a smack. You don't even have to be smart, just be smarter than the machine.

>>543500568Cad/cam is a human crutch based on the concepts of standardization and interchangeability which are human constructs to make engineering comprehensible and to the human brain and streamline manufacturing against human cognitive constraints. That’s why it stands for “computer-aided.” AI doesn’t need a model crutch, it will figure out it can just ignore CAD/CAM and directly achieve anything it needs for any task by just engineering anything from scratch, copying anything that exists with computerized mapping, ditching g-code, canned tool pathing, etc. and just running machine tools with pure vectoring tied to nothing but raw engineering principles and pure geometry and physics.

>>543501616>>543501629Show me a machine that does "on the spot" fixes for a variety of broken parts (without direct replacement because that would cost way too much), and can keep downtime low.As for traveling I used to when I worked for Honda. I went to a lot of countries on their dime to fix shit the brown people couldn't. Btw, Germany makes the best tools. Mexico and China suck. (When I had to go to China they kept guards on me when I wanted to go anywhere and had a specific shop "for Americans" but the workers there ate slop juice in a bowl. Mexico put me in a neighborhood that was with major drug dealers so it was awesome because they didn't allow riff-raff around their homes.) Neither country knew shit about die repair.

>>543500637Socialism is about ignoring price discovery for political reasons, what I’m talking about is AI surpassing price discovery with raw computational capability and dynamically adjusting the economy more effectively than a market response can.

>>543502099Post:>this argument is retardedYour reading:>this is being shilledI wonder if you have considered using your noggin.Someone was being mocked, and it wasn't you. That just couldn't pass, could it?
>>543502099Kill yourself, kike. I'll be in town soon and If I catch you alive I'm going after your smallhat family, too
>>543502279not really, that's serious truth right there. these days a lot of money is offered on what seems to be not much work, but it's worth it since it's money that buys ALL of future employee's work/skill, like all the humans that would have ever worked in that job, by having a few of them train the AI.everyone will happily literally fully sell their soul for a bit of extra cash on top of a normal pay for the job.>somebody will take that money, might as well be me

>>543493586They tried. They couldn't hack it. Being a machinist sucks anyway.
>>543493939We've been in a machinst shortage since the 80s, and it's just getting worse.
>>543495207>after a major break (say 14 pieces because an operator stamped too many in the die) thow about stop breaking it? prevention is worth a thousand of (You)

>>543495207anyway, even if it's true, this thread is just you gloating? you think your single job will exist in an island of stability while the rest of the world radically changes around you. you expect widespread instability, except for your role as a die machine fixer?everyone else will be fucked.. but they'll still want their dies repaired. this is just a very weird flex. 35pbtid
>>543502539I don't break them. I fix them. I don't run the dies people break.

>>543493506Mate, your job is being done by robots since 2015. You just didn't earn your employer enough money to buy one.Yet...
>>543502291while it has potential to change things, the way it's being used now signals hell on earth awaits.surveillance pricing? fuck outta here.they record everything everyone does, predicts your tastes, and then charges the maximum price it can get away with.you'd think it would charge rich people more but the tests "journalists" we're doing suggested rich neighborhoods were actually charged less. the tests were pretty spotty. it's crazy though seeing wild price swings on phones right next to each other. one Uber ride for 22 and another for 48 to the same location from the same location>seize the means of productioncheck. that wasn't aimed at baristas. blackrock having 9% of every company is enough to pressure them to implement ESG.>from each according to their ability>to each according to their needhere it comes. you ready? "fairness" when fairness has quotation marks around it.
>>543493939Literally. There'll be so many jobless saps ready to do any job. And that's just during the transition phase (which is already happening). Eventually there will be robots that can do tradies' actual jobs too.Third worlders will be the last to be laid-off because they are much cheaper and much more competitive with AI + 3rd world countries don't have the capital to buy the hypothetical state-of-the-art robotics.
>>543502654you won't need to fix it if they stop breaking it.
>>543502907I’m not saying it’s automatically a good thing, I’m saying it’s superior in the abstract. Think of it this way, it’ll be at least as superior at allocating resources as capitalism was superior to socialism or feudalism. It doesn’t win the contest of morality it wins the contest of physics. It’s superior in a purely Darwinian sense
>>543502637Most tradies are like this. They see "hur durr, fucking basedboys are losing their jobs!" and clap at their own self-righteousness and because daddy Trump says it's great being a tradie
>>543503013Wear and tear happens when metal rubs against metal.
>>543502099Because once all of the white collar jobs are gone for men (the only remaining ones will be for Boomers, DEI, and women), they're going to be jobless. They're promoting you being a disposable chattel slave now instead of later

>>543503134If tradies were smart enough to understand the interconnectedness of the global economy, they wouldn't be tradies.
>>543503325I’m amazed they don’t have you bouncing around between five machines with every second of your spare time deburring, gathering shit for the next job and scrubbing the machines. If it’s not like that yet it will be once berkeshire Hathaway buys your shop out.
>>543502857>Muh robotsRobots work well in a very narrow set of circumstances; constant repetitive work. They fail miserably in job shop environments and repair work.
>>543502503>we've been in a shortage!>industry is 70yo never-retiring boomers at the top making 70/hr to basically not work and zoomers who make 15/hr to do everything>wonder why there is a shortage
>>543503741>job shop There used to be a lot of shit they needed blacksmiths for that job shops eventually took over. Once AI is good enough to take over all production shops it’ll eat into job shops too. There’s nowhere for job shops to grow and the only thing protecting them for now is computation limitations which are narrowing rapidly.
>>543503949There is no shortage of any job that these fucks ever shill. There's always a desperate sap willing to do whatever to survive. Our economy needs even less people than it did in 1970 due to automation, yet there's more people than ever. Our
