In my state the prosecutor is specifically forbidden from charging you if the facts fall under those laws. The legal barrier is different from state to state, but generally, in my state, if someone tries to come into your occupied home or vehicle, you can shoot them. If someone assaults you in public where you have a right to be, there's a little more nuance. But generally you can just shoot someone if they assault you and you'll be fine. It only happens a few times a year and the families of people who buried a guy over a "just a fistfight" never stop being hilarious. Yeah, it sucks your person is dead. But maybe you should go around getting into physical fights with other adults in a state where 1 in 4 people are carrying guns?
