There are "jobs" like working in the cafeteria, maintenance, in the laundry room etc. But obviously these are unpaid and don't even remove any time from your sentence. Most people are classified as "dorm workers" which means that they literally do not have a job, just on paper. To answer your question, yes most of the prisoners just sit in their cells all day. Yes it is as boring as it sounds.

Ex corrections officer here.General population prisoners get 2 1 hour rec sessions per day, they have a yard and are provided frisbees, sportsballs, and other types of games. Oftentimes they can purchase food from the canteen during rec time, it is like convenience store type stuff. They use money loaded on to a prison account card by friends, family etc.They have 3 meals per day. The food is not very good, but they get around 2000 calories per day and various dietary requirements are accommodated.When they go to get food, they are escorted single file by at least 2 officers.They either have jobs such as food prep, inside or outside grounds maintenance, or they go to various education or personal development courses. When they go to their jobs or classes, they are escorted by at least 2 officers single file to their destinations.Lights turn on at 4am, and the first meal is at 5am. Last meal is usually around 3pm. It takes a while as they are fed by dorm, and there cannot be much overlap.Inside of their dorms, they watch tv, read, play chess or dominos. Some dorms have special permissions for board games and other such things.They have access to warm showers.They have to be counted at least 7 times per day, at which time they have to sit on their bunks until 2 officers have verified the count and the entire prison has cleared the count.They have shitty tablets that they can play games on and watch videos. Apparently they have to pay for it. They don't have access to social media or web browsers, they don't have free access to any app stores.they don't get to charge them themselves, they have to turn them in or retrieve them at specified times.Prison rape can happen, but prisons are legally obligated to treat every rape or sexual abuse allegation seriously and an investigation is conducted for each allegation, regardless of how bulkshit it may be.Honestly, it is relatively cushy, but they have absolutely no privacy or freedom of movement.

I had a coworker who was in prison for awhile and I've talked to the guy who watches them work a few timesthey get several options for outside work, most of which involve landscaping or a shovel I work for a utility company and several times the guy in charge had them dig up a leak for usidk what they get paid but every time I hear a number its comically low
