Now imagine this kind of effect on a country as big as Ukraine where at least a few decades ago most of the people could speak Russian, and it’s easy to see why Putin seethed so much about them. At the very least he reasoned he had a Lukashenko type bootlicker in command and guess what it was that got him ousted by the people in revolt? Rejection of EU integration. The Ukrainians are more than smart enough to see the EU is a much more prosperous partner than Russia and Putin just could not fucking stand that and still can’t and ruined his country’s foreseeable future over his butthurt.
