The problem is they don't perform executions in a timely manner. Cases involving the death penalty should be court expedited to the top of the list. The entire appeals ro execution process should take more than a few years. Then you save decades worth of time and money that would have been wasted incarceration someone you were going to kill anyway. Then you take the untold hundreds of thousands of dollars that saves, re-invest it in the court system, and then maybe it won't be so backed up.

There is no point long term punishing someone who will never be rehabilitated, and its not worth the additional cost.
