Conscription works if it’s done in a society that makes giving away some of your time worth it. There’s definitely more patriotic mindset here than the average country, but peer pressure and the mindset of ”if I had to so should they” are also large factors. And you can only get so much out of a soldier whose only reason to be there is that they were forced to, both during peace and conflict.
