It's literally risk free. Do you know just how fucked America would be if it couldn't pay off its debts? That would collapse our status as the reserve currency over night. The US would fight multiple wars before it would allow this to happen.
It's safe. Extremely safe.

Yes, GDP.

Theoretically, the USA can draw a colossal amount of funds (it does already) due to its GDP. If one country on Earth should be able to have a primary deficit, it is the USA. But when you look at the data, they haven't had a primary deficit in decades.

They are worse st fiscal policy than Argentina.

technically it's pretty good, you put in 1000 dollars and get 1500 dollars back 10 years later, as long as you don't expect hyperinflation or america to go bankrupt then it's a pretty safe investment, however people are expecting hyperinflation and america going bankrupt now
>>
The only reason the US government debt scam works is that everyone else in the world is forced to use dollars as money for international trade. It's only risk free because everyone is forced into using it for exchange.

It's our dollar, and your problem. A US debt implosion would destroy the global economy, but it would keep America intact.

The US has known for literally decades that policies like social security, medicare and medicaid are unsustainable somewhere shortly after 2030 because of the exploding in costs due to people past the age of 65 going up all the time.

Its not even the first time they've seen programs like these go bankrupt, just the first time its happened with large government programs because they were designed at a time when average person basically died before being able to make claims on them and most people's primary healthcare costs and pensions where covered by their employer. Several huge American corporations imploded because they had systems where you could retire after 25-30 years in the company which could mean retiring at 43-50 for many.

The alternativess are either raising taxes to absurd levels that would fuck over half the working population on a permanent basis or basically telling old people that they spent their entire lives paying into a giant pyramid scheme which is now bust.
>>
>>543544491
Zoom out lol. Sky is not falling.

US deficit is a problem but easily solvable with modest budget cuts and/or tax increases. Could be solved in one day literally. The real problem that is difficult to solve is that democracies lack political incentives to make fiscally responsible decisions.

The US has political gridlock. How do you suggest finding a solution politically to the fiscal problems?
>>
>>543546648
It just has to materially beat the rate of inflation. Not the official rate either but the actual rate. I would say 5% per annum at this point probably puts you in a 4-5% hole. If you want something really safe and inflation proof over the long run, buy physical gold. Or Bitcoin for the zoomers.

You're exaggerating. Social security is a pay-as-you-go system. This means it doesn't simply "run out" because workers are continuously paying into it. Absolute worst case scenario is boomers get their promised benefits cut by 23-25% when the social security trust fund runs out. In fact the only reason there is a shortfall in the first place is because when the system was originally set up it benefited people who hadn't paid into the system their whole lives. If they had structured it differently or funded that shortfall in the beginning, the social security trust fund would have been capitalized sufficiently to weather the demographic boom and bust. There's a lot of research on this and the problems and solutions are actually very well understood.

Same is true of the budget. Massive tax increases are not required. Go look up a stat called "general government revenue as a % of GDP". This stat basically measures the total tax take from all levels of government combined (other measured of this like central govt budget as a % of GDP lead to poor comparisons between countries because of federal vs unitary states etc.). US is one of the lowest in the OECD. The US govt as a whole could raise total tax burden by 50% and still have lower taxes than Germany for example.

In order to get to a stable situation where the real inflation-adjusted value of the national debt decreases over time due to inflation, the US only has to close about a 2.5-4.5% GDP gap which would be split between tax increases and deficit reduction. For context this amount is only about half the difference between the US general govt revenue as a % of GDP and the OECD average. In other words we could solve our fiscal problem and still have a far lower tax burden than most developed nations.

Most of the economy-related political outrage out there is based on ignorance and a lack of understanding of how to actually analyze or compare things.

I'm an economist BTW.
