For those of you who don't know, in Saint-Domingue (which became Haiti) free blacks (which included mulattoes) owned one-third of the plantation property and one-quarter of the slaves. When the French National Convention voted to abolish slavery in the colonies on Feb. 4 1794, many mulattoes were opposed to the move, as they owned slaves themselves.Haiti, of course, turned into a beacon of good governance after revolution led to its liberation from France in 1804.
