I don't know if most people understand, but the long history of black on white violence in this country is the root of these conflicts.While I acknowledge the tragic death that occurred was terrible and regrettable, I also have to acknowledge that scenarios like this are inevitable as long as the black on white crime rate remains so high. There's so much unhealed trauma boiling up just beneath the surface in whites who've been victimized their whole lives by blacks. I can't condone the terrible act, of course, but we *must* culturally learn to speak with empathy about both victims in this case.One, a victim of violence.The other, a prisoner in his own skin, perpetually marked as a target of abuse from birth to death. Oftentimes, being white around black people can feel like a sentence already being served. A sentence for a crime you didn't even commit. I call it bounded criminality, where the presumption that you'll commit an act of racism against a black is so strong, and the years of constant abuse based on that assumption so prevalent, that one almost unconsciously acts out the very crime they'd been indirectly accused of for so many years.Truly this was an unfortunate situation, but we must, as a society, ensure that the perpetrator (no doubt the conduit of the violence) receive the help he needs to recover from decades of abuse at the hands of blacks.After all, what are we? What is justice? Without empathy and a reflex toward *healing*, we'd be no better than barbarians. We need to re-examine what we call justice. What we think of as 'being just'. It must be done holistically and contextually.Our first priority MUST be getting him the help he needs in this difficult time. And no, that is NOT ignoring the terrible act of violence that befell the young black woman. Instead, it's understanding that it happened within the context of long-term abuse - both physical and mental - and understanding that hurt people hurt people. We must end the cycle here and now.
