In my state there is such a thing as "adverse possession" where if you occupy and improve a plot of otherwise unused land you can file for ownership. But this has to go on for 15 years and the title to the land can't be encumbered in any way. So in practical terms it's impossible and if you try it you will go to jail for trespassing at a minimum.

Buying 100 Acres of woodland for low prices and then doing no maintenance on it ever does not make you a conservationist. And if someone manages to 'sneak' onto the property and live there for a decade, then that is your fault and they've clearly put more care into their part of the property than you have.
