Nukes are really terrifying. I had a very vivid dream the day before reaching Hiroshima about being near/in a nuclear strike and it's the first time I think I comprehended the destruction. And the idea that we have these pointed all over. A bomb so large you can't escape no matter how far you run or where you hide. I also was reading a shit ton of AUM Shinrikyo stuff and had that weird jet lag plus lots of drinking daze so I think that made it more surreal. Just one of those dreams that sticks with me.

Nukes were the cleanest possible end to the war, for both sides. Japan was exhausted, their navy was destroyed and civilians were starving. But none of them considered surrender an option, they were preparing a vicious homeland defense to the last man. It would have been a more fanatical Vietnam, flamethrowers and carpet bombing vs endless ambushes in rough terrain, while America was still recovering from the European front. Instead of all that destruction, Japan lost two cities and America lost zero soldiers, then we got to rebuilding.
