Back then, a corporation would see that you could at least show up to class on time and put in the work to get a Bachelor's Degree and they would give you like a 40-50k a year job right out of college. Even better, many GenX were able to keep these jobs through 2008 and the ones that lost their jobs were able to find similar paying jobs once the economy started to recover. Millennials truly got fucked. After 2008 companies would only hire you if you had an actually useful degree. Merely having a degree was no longer enough. My first job out of college in 2013 was at a large nonprofit and I got $13 per hour. My GenX coworker worked on the line for Ford Motor Company in 1990 and got $33 per hour (it was for a weekend relief shift).
