Very few people understand the Netherlands, but it's basically what happens when urbanization consumes an entire Delta with a strong mercantile class leading this process for centuries long uninterrupted. Unfortunately consuming all that is native and natural to your soil results in crippling overpopulation and a native folk who has been stripped from all it's dignity and pride. I know it sounds cliche at this point, but the Dutch have become spineless and overly modernized for the sake of "het lekker geregeld hebben", meaning that things are near and reliable due to the sophisticated system desperately being held in place. You can blame post-WW2 policies or the industrial-revolution, or even the calvinists for this, but the fact is that we have reached a point of extreme cultural fatigue and saturation that demands radical change. It literally feels like living on an anthill, except it's built like a microchip and you're told to accept this soul-draining state, due to we "having it pretty good here".
