Yeah 20/20 hindshight yadda yadda. Ever since the first tanks appeared, their mobility, armor protection, and firepower increased. This was none more prominent than in the early 40's. In those times you did not design tanks for the engines you had today, or with the armor protection to defend agaisnt the weapons of today, or with the firepower to defeat the armor protection of today, but all these 5 years ahead.

Germany went into the superheavy programme with the expectation that by the time it is completed, any less armor protection or firepower would be obsolete, and that engine technology would reach the level needed to move the thing reasonably well. Same with suspension and other parts. During those times everything developed quickly and things that were considered impossible yesterday become commonplace tomorrow.

German engineers simply did not have the hindsight we have now to know where the hard limits are. They were not any more retarded than the people who predicted infinite growth of processor power for computers or the people who predict infinite growth for AI now, or the people who created our economic system dependent on infinite growth.

Germany was hopelessly outmanned and outproduced from day 1 and they knew it. Their only hope was to outgun and outlast the enemy enough to make up for it. If they stayed with "reasonable" tank designs they'd still have been outproduced 10:1 and where is the reason in that? They had absolutely zero chanche, nil, nada, to compete economically, so they tried their best to create "wonder weapons" to compete by sheer quality.

The IS-3 entered service in 1945, the Americans had the Super Pershing, the British had their own borderline superheavy tank designs coing up. All the so-called overkill German designs were created exactly to counter such things. Or can anyone here name any other gun than the laughed-at Jagdtiger's that could penetrate the frontal armor of these?
